Is it cheaper to file my state and federal taxes separate?

Federal e-file is free, but there is a $19.99 charge to e-file a state return.  You can print these and file for only the price of ink, paper, and postage.

It would only be cheaper if you mail your state taxes rather than e-filing them assuming you have the same filing options that I do (I have free Federal e-file and $19.99 to e-file state. Mailing the state return would cost postage which should be way less than $19.99).

Are you using the Online version or the Desktop program installed on your computer?  Online and Desktop pricing are different.

With Online federal and state are separate charges.  Online Deluxe is 34.99 for federal and 36.99 for state.  So 71.98 is right.  If you don't want to pay for state now you can delete the state return.  You can add it back in again later.

And be aware, if you want to have the fees deducted from your federal refund there is an EXTRA 34.99 Refund Processing Service charge for that.  So pay the fees with a credit card.
