I am married filing separately for 2022 and was married filing jointly for 2021. My e-file federal was just rejected saying the AGI was incorrect. I used the exact AGI from my federal 2021 return, but the AGI was for both spouses as it was a joint return. What do I do now?
The 2021 return was recently returned by mail with form 3531 because my spouse and I forgot to sign it on the signatures page. So we signed it and mailed it back in. Would that affect this?
If it was rejected for AGI—-be aware that many 2021 returns took so long for the IRS to process that your 2021 AGI might not be in the IRS system. Try using zero instead.
If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year. The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.
