In filing my 2020 federal return there is still no way to enter the ip pin number before filing the return. The same problem occurred for 2019. We need a fix here.

How do I add or remove my 6-digit IP PIN?

  1. Open your return if you don't already have it open.
  2. Inside TurboTax, search for IP PIN (don't forget the space) and then select the Jump to link in the search results.
  3. On the Identity Protection PIN screen, answer Yes and enter your IP PIN in the space provided.
    • If you need to remove the IP PIN, select edit, then the trash icon.
  4. Select Done.

If you've ever gotten an IP PIN or CP01A notice from the IRS, or opted into their IP PIN pilot program, you must enter your 2020 IP PIN to validate your identity so you can e-file.

You'll get this rejection if your IP PIN is missing.

First, find your 6-digit IP PIN

  • Look on the CP01A letter you received in December or January for your 2020 taxes. IP PINs from prior tax years won't work.
  • If you lost or never got your CP01A letter, retrieve your IP PIN online at the IRS's Get an IP PIN website.

If you can't find your IP PIN or get it online, we'll give you some other options when you follow these instructions:

  1. Sign in to your account and select the Fix my return button.
  2. On the Let's fix your returns and then refile screen, select Fix it now.
  3. Enter your IP PIN in the field provided and select Continue.
    • If you weren't able to find your IP PIN, select I can't find my IP PIN. We'll give you a phone number to call at the IRS or you can select File by Mail if you can't get a new IP PIN.
  4. Confirm your IP PIN on the Make sure you're using your Identity Protection PIN screen is correct, and then select This is my assigned IP PIN - Continue.
  5. Select the Continue to refile button to e-file your return again.

If you have that IP PIN already, in Turbo tax you go to Personal tab, then Other tax situations tab, then drop down to Other return info and Start Identity protection PIN tab. And from my experience (not from TT support) you still have to enter a self-pin at the signature page.

Instead of making someone search, just tell them where to go and what to do!

TurboTax and all other tax software supports the six-digit IP PIN.

Do not confuse with the five digit self-select PIN.

The IRS requires a new IP Pin each year. Here is a link to the IRS website where you can get an IP Pin for the 2021 tax year.

This TurboTax help article will help you to get the AGI from 2020.
