Trying to import a TD Ameritrade document gets a "following fields have limits" error stating please enter the document ID without spaces from your form 1099
However, that is what I correctly did, but I cannot get past this error. I have entered all 11 characters without spaces. I will note that my ID starts with a zero which maybe an issue with the coding?
Way too much data to enter by hand. How can I get pass this?
Try typing the document number in all lowercase letters instead of uppercase. Please comment back if that does not work.
Hi Michelle, Thanks for the quick response. The document ID I have for this account is all numeric starting with a zero.
I'm a retired IT professional. I have to assume that since it is all numeric and has a leading zero that it is dropping that leading zero resulting in only 10 characters(digits) and that is why I am getting the "Following fields have limits" error. But that is an assumption on my part.
It still doesn't work.
Thanks Bill
Try to clear the cache on the browser, as this may help. Once you clear the cache and get logged back in, try using a letter O instead of the zero.
Please comment here if this does not work.
no good!
I cleared the cache on my browser (Microsoft edge) but I am not using my browser. I am using the downloaded application - TurboTax deluxe 2021 on a windows 11 laptop.
I replaced the leading zero with the letter "o" and that got passed the screen edit error, but that solution resulted in failing to get pass the Ameritrade logon process, which requires the correct document ID.
The document ID input field definition as coded cannot handle a numeric entry with a leading zero. This appears to be a bug in the coding that should be fixed, but that's just my opinion.
I currently cannot get this data imported for this account, and I will have a much larger account from TD Ameritrade available soon I will need to import, which may also have an all numeric document ID. I just hope that one doesn't have a leading zero.
Thanks, Bill
It is possible that your 1099 is not ready to import from the broker just yet, even if you've already received it. Please visit the link below for more information.
The problem is not with the document not being ready, the problem is in the editing of the document ID screen field. It will not accept my entry of the document ID. this is a screen editing error. You can easily try it on your end by typing an all numeric document ID number into the field that starts with a zero.
use a windows 10 or 11 platform with turbotax deluxe and try it.
you will get the field length error I am encountering
Please reach out to TurboTax Customer Support as your issue would be best resolved with one-on-one support.
My consolidated 1099 from TD Ameritrade also failed to import with the exact same error about document id format. I think Turbo Tax does not like all-numeric document id because I could import successfully with another account which document id is alpha-numeric. When can this be fixed?
You can take a look at the FAQ link provided below to see if that resolves your issue and try enabling third-party access. It is for Schwab but may apply to Ameritrade as well. You can also try to add the information manually
How can I fix my 1099 import issue?
As I mentioned before, I have two TD Ameritrade accounts with identical setup (never changed). Today, I was able to import for one account (if it matters, with alphanumeric document ID). But got stuck with document ID format error (which is all 11 digits). So something like “enabling third-party access” is most likely not going to help. And, if my memory serves me right, last year when I prepared for 2020 tax return, my two TD Ameritrade account imports beautifully the first time. No problem whatsoever. If this is not resolved soon, my last resort will be entering all 6 pages of my 1099-B manually...😭
As an active investor, be aware that your category Box A or Box D sales without adjustments do not require Form 8949, so there is no reason to import or key in those transactions.
Instead use the "enter a summary" option to put your numbers on Schedule D Line 1a or Line 8a.
--
If you have wash sales, it gets more complicated since those adjusted transactions have to be itemized on Form 8949 and the summary totals adjusted accordingly.
Enter the wash sales on Form 8949, then use the subtotal results on the bottom of that form (Line 2) to know how much to subtract which gives you the Schedule D line 1a totals. Be sure to NOT check the adjustments box in the summary window.
I have been using turbotax and importing TDAmeritrade for 10+ years and I never had an issue importing the data before. I will admit this is the first time I remember all numeric document IDs. I believe I am getting the error indicating a field length error due to my doc ID starting with a zero. I received no real help on this forum other than to contact the support center which I am planning to do today.
I have two TDAmeritrade accounts. One is 8 pages and the other I have not received yet but will be somewhere between 20 to 30 pages. I am not going to type that data in manually. Either I will get a timely fix or I will move to another tax package. As a retired IT professional with over 40 years experience with computer software, I cannot believe a simple field edit cannot be fixed in mere minutes.
Just got off the phone with support and they accepted the issue and sent it to IT to be looked at. I also tried entering eleven '1's as a doc ID and it got the same error, so it didn't have anything to do with a leading zero in my case. The input screen is not coded to handle an all-numeric document ID.
Called TD Ameritrade who basically indicated they followed SEC guidelines in issuing the document. I asked if they could reissue the document with an alphanumeric document ID. The asked the tax department manager who stated "no" the document was issued correctly, and the issue will need to be fixed on the Turbotax side.
I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed.
To do so, please follow the instructions below:
For Turbo Tax Online:
1. Sign into your online account.
2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
3. A drop-down will appear. Select
Tools
4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets
sanitized and transmitted to us.
6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.
For Turbo Ta Desktop:
1. Open your return.
2. Click the Online tab in the black
bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent”
3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created. Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
4. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.
It is not necessary to have my document to verify the error. Just go to the import screen and enter in an account number, it doesn't need to be a good one as this is a screen edit error that occurs before any attempt to contact the brokerage. Then enter a 11 digit all numeric number, any one will do. and you will get the error. The document ID field editing rejects an all numeric entry. period.
That was basically what TD Ameritrade rep told me when I talked to them yesterday even before I started researching the Turbo Tax doc id format error. Rep insists that fix should be on Turbo Tax side.
I got the exact same problem. My document ID has all numeric numbers. I typed a couple of 11-digit numbers into the field, then the same error message will pop up. This sounds like an input field validation problem inside the software itself, but not the response from TD Ameritrade.
Well, it has been a couple of days and I started up TurboTax, got updates, and the importing document error persist. I noted I got an email related to the case I opened with TurboTax Service and Support indicating the case was closed and to please provide feedback. How do they close a case that is not fixed yet???
case number: [phone number removed]
TurboTax cannot handle an all-numeric document number and this need to be fixed ASAP!
My feedback for this invalid-doc-id case: I agree with IMovertaxed 100%. Tonight I updated my TurboTax, attempted to import same document but unfortunately same doc id format error occurred. My questions:
1. Does the case closed by TurboTax have a resolution? Like a description of the software fix going into which update (date or release #)?
2. Do users get to see the summary of each update?
3. How do I find out which level of update my TurboTax 2021 is currently at? And if that level has this fix we need? Without this info, we are kind of shooting in the dark hoping problem will work with the next update.
Issue with today's update:
Even attempt to import one of my alpha-numeric ids failed with latest update:
After I keyed in the TD Ameritrade, account #, doc id (letters+numbers), a list of documents with the correct totals were located and are ready for import. So I clicked the "Import now" button, it says document is being imported. Next dialoge asked about special circumstances. I clicked "none of these apply to me". Next screen puzzles me:
Confirm your financial institution info:
Name of Institution <blank>
Account Number None
As both were already keyed in previously in order to retrieve and import the docs, I clicked continue. Nothing happens. I was stuck on that screen (stuck even if I provided name & account #, again). I can only go back and like I expected, the import failed internally and only an entry of "Untitled" with all blanks was listed. This gets me really worried now. It seems to be getting worse!
It's now been over two weeks and the TurboTax package still has the software bug that will not allow the importing of documents where they have an all-numeric document ID.
I have not heard any correspondence on this issue lately other than from other user who are suffering the same problem. I had a ticket opened that was closed; but the problem persists.
I need to know what, if anything, is being done to resolve this problem. If TurboTax has no plans to fix this, I need to that as well. Currently, I, among others, are left hanging awaiting resolution.
Please inform us on this matter.
for reference to the prior message, here's the case closure I received:

no information on any resolution was given
but requested I participate in a survey. I did.
Finally with the Turbo Tax update released 2/23/2022, I successfully imported the (digit-only) previously-failed document on 3/2/22. Thank you for the fix!
P.S. I realized my latest issue with doc import getting stuck with an empty institution name on investment sales screen is likely as a result of all zeros in my 1099-B. When I received my consolidated 1099s (with doc ID), I automatically assume I can import the doc. And Turbo Tax does not stop me from doing that. To be fair, it does ask if I have a 1099-B. I clicked yes not seeing the all-zero entires. And it eventually went downhill from there... But instead of getting stuck on any screen, Turbo Tax should be able to error out more gracefully and recover. A very minor issue... Just my 2 cents.
