Yes, if you received Paid Family Leave check the box.  To determine if you received PFL, check box 14 on your W-2.  If an amount is entered there, then you received Paid Family Leave.

Enter your W-2 exactly as you received it in TurboTax. You will be taxed at the Federal level, and not taxed at the State level for these benefits.

If you received PFL, you should have also received a 1099-G for the same amount? Enter that in the Unemployment section--which simply means the IRS did not require your employer to withhold any taxes but you are still subject to taxes now.

I received "paid parental leave" during the year, which appears to be included in my W2 Box 1 wages. There is no entry for it in box 14. I'm not aware of there having been any 1099 issued. Should I be drilling down further here or is this a fairly common situation? Should I opt NOT to check the box for paid family leave?

Can you clarify if you received the PFL from your employer or did a third party send you payments?

The funds came from the employer.

You should enter your Form W-2 exactly as it is shown.

Do you have an amount in Box 14 of your W-2?  If so then you do have paid family leave.

If you are unsure ask your employer.

Did you receive a Form 1099-G?  If you did you should enter that Form in TurboTax.

Here is how:

If you received unemployment payments or took paid family leave, enter your 1099-G info.

Unemployment compensation and paid family leave are entered in the same place:

  1. Open or continue your tax return
  2. Search for 1099-G and select the Jump to link at the top of the search results
  3. On the Did you or Spouse receive unemployment or paid family leave benefits? screen, answer Yes
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions to enter your 1099-G information

if you are using the mobile app:

If you received unemployment payments or took paid family leave, enter your 1099-G info in the mobile app. Here's how:
