I need to complete form 8962. The IRS sent me a letter requesting this information. My tax guy said that I can go into turbo tax and pull up 8962, where do I find this?

I already have 1095-A, so that's not the issue.

Please explain what you mean when you refer to "my tax guy."   Did the "tax guy" prepare your tax return?    Or did you prepare your own return using TurboTax?

I used turbo tax. The tax person is my dad's tax accountant who I called to get some help.

I only put tax guy instead of tax person because I was running out of space.

I did the return myself using turbo tax.

@jlsosin See this TurboTax support FAQ concerning the IRS 12c letter and the Form 8962 - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-forms/got-12c-letter-irs-form-8962/L78Qyi5gK_US_en_US?uid=lkh7f16b

You will need a copy of the Form 1095-A sent to you by you state Marketplace Exchange or from healthcare.gov

Yeah, I've got that part. That is not the issue.

The issue is that I don't know some of the answers to the questions on form 8962, my fathers tax person told me that if I log into turbo tax I can get the form and it will automatically put in what I need and I can transfer the rest from 1095-A, but when I log into turbo tax and search for it, nothing comes up. So I'm stuck.

So when I log into turbo tax, it acts as though it doesn't know me. Even though i've used it for 10 years. It starts from the beginning and asks me to tell it about myself and my taxes.

There must be a way to pull up taxes that have already been done?

thanks for your help, much appreciated.

@jlsosin If this is for tax year 2022 and you are using the TurboTax online editions, follow the instructions in the support FAQ that was provided - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-forms/got-12c-letter-irs-form-8962/L78Qyi5gK_US_en_US?uid=lkh7f16b

To access your current year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state.

This will take you back to the 2022 online tax return.  Enter your Form 1095-A

2021

@jlsosin For tax year 2021 and you used the TurboTax online editions you will need to amend the 2021 tax return to enter the Form 1095-A.  The program will create a completed Form 8962 which you can print out for the IRS.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a tax return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/amend-change-correct-return-already-filed/L4VjJ9BA2_US_en_US?uid=ld1n99kr

You have to sign onto the 2021 account using the exact same User ID and password you used to create the 2021 account.

If you cannot access the 2021 online account then use the Account Recovery process to get the User ID.

Go to this TurboTax website to start the Account Recovery process - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/account-recovery/

If you are unable to get the correct User ID for the 2021 online account then click on the blue

Try something else

on the Account Recovery logon screen.

I'd like to contact a turbo tax specialist to help me with this process, but I don't know how to do that.

I tried calling turbo tax one time and pretty sure I spent 2 hours going in circles but never got to a person.

@jlsosin You would want to Amend the return.

My Docs would have any items that you uploaded to TurboTax.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for My Docs - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/small-business-processes/docstm/L0VlCWX5G_US_en_US?uid=lkhdpcpj

I tried to Amend the return and it says I didn't file any online taxes with Turbo Tax in 2021. (Which I did, obviously). so I don't know how to do this.

I mailed them in because they were late, but I did complete them through Turbo Tax, so I don't know what it's talking about.

When you printed and mailed the 2021 tax return were you using the TurboTax online editions or the TurboTax desktop editions installed on a personal computer?  The 2021 tax return could only be printed and mailed using the TurboTax online editions before the end of October 2022.

If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created.  TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.

yes. it was after Oct. so it's stored on my computer. I used the download edition I'm pretty sure.

I can pull up a pdf of my taxes, but I'm still missing the form 8962. There's a form that looks similar, the 3849, but obviously that is not what they are asking for! ugh, ack!

Ok...Since you used the 2021 desktop editions, then all you need to do is start the 2021 program on your computer.  Continue the 2021 tax return that you filed then follow the instructions in the Support FAQ for the Form 8962 either Windows or Mac - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-forms/got-12c-letter-irs-form-8962/L78Qyi5gK_US_en_US?uid=lkhg2or7

ok, so I opened the desktop form and clicked on continue return. Then I searched for 1095-a,

it tells me to click on search and enter 1095-a and click on jump to 1095-a but that is what I did and all it does is give me instructions. How do I actually "jump" to 1095-a?

ok, so I figured it out and entered all the info from the 1095-a.

But how do I get form 8962?

When I search for 8962, it takes me back to 1095-a, which I already filled out.

  1. When you return to the Your 2022 Deductions & Credits screen, select File (top left of screen) and choose Print
  2. Select Specific Forms
  3. Select the checkbox for Form 8962 Premium Tax Credit and print it
  4. If your refund or balance due has changed, print Form 1040: Individual Tax Return too
    1. You can check if your refund changed by comparing line 35a on your original 1040 and the one you just printed. If you had a balance due, check line 37
  5. Send the following to the IRS address or fax number given in your IRS letter:
    1. Form 8962, Premium Tax Credit
    2. Copy of your Form 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace Statement
    3. A copy of the IRS letter that you received
    4. Only if the refund or owed amount has changed: also include page 2 of your 1040
