You can downgrade your TurboTax account by using Clear and Start Over feature but bear in mind that the different TurboTax "editions" handle different tax situations and their associated forms.

If you need, for example, to enter your itemized deductions in the Free Edition, you'll be asked to upgrade to Deluxe.

Trying to see if i can file using just the free version. What type of forms would bump me from the Free version to the Deluxe version?

Situations not covered in TurboTax Free Edition include:

  • Itemized deductions
  • Business or 1099-MISC income
  • Stock sales
  • Rental property income
  • Credits, deductions and income reported on schedules 1–3, such as the Student Loan Interest Deduction

As long as you haven't submitted payment, deducted the TurboTax fee from your refund, or registered, you can erase your return and start from scratch in TurboTax Online.

If you started with the TurboTax Free Edition and you was upgraded to to the Deluxe Edition:

TurboTax Free Edition (and TurboTax Live Basic) are intended for taxpayers with very simple returns that can fit on the new 1040 form without any schedules.

If we detect that your tax situation requires expanded coverage, like deductions for owning a home or self-employment income, we'll prompt you to upgrade to a version that supports the forms you need so we can maximize your tax deductions and ensure you file an accurate return.

Can I downgrade to a lower-priced version of TurboTax Online?
