I can tell you how to decline PLUS so it won't keep doing that, and can provide screen images.
Be aware that in Free Edition, while the Federal return is free, there is still a fee for state return preparation of 29.99.
If you are looking for the product that is free for both Federal and State, that is the TurboTax FREEDOM Edition (not the same as regular Free Edition) in conjunction with the IRS Free File Alliance. We can tell you more about that product if you qualify. If it free for both Federal and State returns, and has no other fees. It is fully-featured and can prepare a Form 1040 or 1040A or 1040EZ. You have to meet ONE of these qualifications to use FREEDOM Edition:
AGI of $33,000 or less
or active duty military (including Reservists and National Guard) with a military-issued W-2 and a 2017 AGI of $66,000 or less
or eligible for the Earned Income Credit (EIC aka EITC).
Let me know which route you wish to pursue. I can tell you how to continue in Free Edition and decline PLUS, or I can tell you more about how to switch to FREEDOM Edition (if you meet one of those qualifications.)
How do I switch to freedom? I thought it was no longer available?
You have to use the special FREEDOM website, AND you have to use a new account (new User ID), or it will keep putting you back in regular Online TurboTax.
Watch for my full answer below about the 2 free products. If you decide to stay in Free Edition, post back and I'll provide screen images on declining PLUS.
