I'm getting an error right before filing, saying "1040/1040SR Wks: Line 11 is too large. My line 10 is negative. It appears TurboTax won't let me continue! Help?

Just talked with someone over the phone.  Apparently the only way to fix this is to clear the textbox and leave it blank.

Line 11 is line 9 minus line 10c.

Line 10c is he total line 10a plus 10b.    Both 10a and 10 b can only be positive numbers.

10a is form Schedule 1 line 22 which is the total of schedule 1 lines 10 to 21, all for which are positive numbers.

Line 10b can only be a positive number of charitable donations up to 300.

How can 10b be negative?   Where do you see a negative number?

I cleared the box - not "0" - just blank. Solved the problem.

I’m getting this same problem and my refund looks like it is way to big.

Try leaving that line blank instead of entering a "0" to resolve this error.

Absolutely correct - requires no entry on line 11if the answer is a negative number.  However, I could not change it to be effective if I was doing from the error citation sheet.  I found I had to go to the original 1040 and blank it on line 11.  It worked.

Happy O checked this area for help.  Solved my error.  Thanks

During Final Checks, I'm getting a check that says 1040/1040SR Wks: Charitable Contributions: Charitable Contributions Must be Entered.

I've already entered all my cash and item donations in the Charitable Contribution Deduction section, so what exactly is it asking for here?  Do I reenter the amount I arrived at in this section? If so, shouldn't the software do this for me?

You will need to leave the field empty, to avoid getting any errors.

The negative number in line 10 was what caused me to continue on, first placing the negative number on line 11, then trying a "0".  Neither worked and both attempts caused the error.

Leave line 11 blank.  However, I could not do it on the flagged error sheet.  I had to go back to the original 1040 ws page and blank line 11.
After doing this, my recheck passed without error.

The recommendation for the payed "Expert" "Employee TurboTax Specialist," @Anonymous is VERY BAD.  If you change the field from $300 to $0, you LOSE your tax deduction, which can be close to $100.  There is a terrible glitch in the TurboTax application.  It appears to have been like this for weeks, with multiple questions like this, and no fix to it.  It asks you how much you gave in charitable contributions, up to $300, but never to enter the details.  But zeroing out the field is the WORST answer.

But @Mike9241 in a different string had the answer.  Basically, you have to go in and add all the individual contributions in detail, even though TurboTax never PROMPTS you to do this on its own.  Here is the full detail he provides:

TT says for the online version you have to enter the cash/money contribution through the contribution worksheet for schedule a. You can not do it through the 1040 worksheet.

do a Search for charitable contributions and click on the jump-to result. Be sure to indicate that the contribution was “Money” or else TurboTax will not ask about it later.

Then, in the Federal Review at the end of your data entry, TurboTax will realize that you are taking the Standard Deduction and ask you to enter the amount of the charitable contribution that was in cash.

I am taking the itemized deductions and got a similar error - TurboTax had put 300 in line 10b.  When I change it to 0 or blank, I lose approximately $75 off my return.

Even though I'm itemizing my deductions, should I also add in my charitable contributions on the contribution worksheet?

This error on line 11 has occurred for many of us, so many that it is my understanding the responsible experts and programmers are reviewing the matter.

Rather than wait for resolution, I was comfortable is leaving line 11 totally blank rather than place a negative number (which was the calculated answer) or a "0", I was guided to leave line 11 blank.  When I did that, the "error" notification was eliminated.

If you do this, go to the actual 1040 ws to make the line 11 error blank.  I was unsuccessful when I tried to do it on the error cition sheet which appeared while checking errors.

Having the same issue with Line 11. Leaving it blank on the prompted form isn't working. How do you get to the actual 1040 ws to manually change the line 11?

No.  You can't manually changed the amount on line 11 of 1040.  Line 11 of 1040 was your adjusted bgross inocme (AGI).  You may check all entries on your return and  do the following:

  1. Click Federal Review located on the upper right hand side of the screen .
  2. Click review to each details ,and it will take you to forms with errors..
  3. You do the same on your state income tax.
  4. When done fixing, go back to Federal Review to check if the return is ready to e-file.

The errors on the return must be fixed in order to successfully transmit the return to the IRS and State.

Try using the search icon to locate the form you need to adjust. The search results will return something similar to "jump to Form A". Once you click the link, you will be taken to the form and you can adjust the field as appropriate. You don't want to use the Form icon on the top right as that will not take you to an editable place.

Hopefully the number of replies will lead to a software update.

No,.  You may not edit line 11.  Line 11 of 1040 was the adjusted gross income.  You may check your data entries on the income screen, and do  the following to check for errors on the return::

  1. Click Federal Review located on the upper right hand side of the screen .
  2. Click review to each details ,and it will take you to line 10b of form 1040..
  3. You do the same on your state income tax.
  4. When done fixing, go back to Federal Review to check if the return is ready to e-file.

The errors on the return must be fixed in order to successfully transmit the return to the IRS and State.

Thank you for your quick reply. It was an error message that alerted me to the original issue. The software does not let you go back and correct the error, it puts you into a bit of a loop. I was able to speak to a Turbo Tax advisor who helped me navigate and correct the issue without the error.

Instead of changing it on the "prompted form" ( it won't work), go to the actual worksheet form and blank line 11.

Joanna, you are referring to the wrong line 11.  The line 11 creating the problem is not line 11 (AGI) on the first page - it is the line 11 towards the very end of the WS - "Deferral of Certain Sch H or SE Filers Smart Worksheet.

Wrong line 11 - not the AGI line 11,  Go to end "Deferral of Certain Sched H or SE Filers Smart Worksheet.  That lin 11 is the problem.  Leave it blank, error disappears.
