Most of the time this rejection occurs when you try to claim a dependent, but that person has filed a tax return and didn’t indicate that they can be claimed as a dependent.
Less commonly, you can get reject IND-517-01 if you entered your dependent's Social Security number incorrectly or if someone filed a fraudulent return using your dependent's Social Security number.
First, verify that you entered your Social Security number correctly:
Next, follow the set of instructions (I, II, or III) that apply to your situation.
I. Your dependent's SSN was incorrect (you had to fix it)
Can someone please provide the text to the 3rd set of instructions (III)? My account is not authorized to click through to the answer.
My return was rejected with IND-517-01. I know that a fraudulent return was filed for my dependent and we already called IRS. How can I fix the rejection?
I used the Turbotax desktop version.
Thank you.
