There are factors to consider when determining if you have to file a 2021 return.
Since you have calculated your self-employed income (net earnings) to be negative you may not need to file if none of these conditions apply:
- You had $400 or more in self-employment net earnings (gross income minus expenses); or
- You had marketplace health insurance and you received advanced payments for the premium tax credit.
- If you're not being claimed as a dependent on another tax return please see the chart Do I need to file a federal return this year?
If you're being claimed as a dependent on someone else's 2021 return, like your parents', go to Do I need to file my own taxes if I'm a dependent?
