I have a negative net income for doordash after I put in the miles I've driven. Do I still need to file? I don't want to pay the $99 turbo tax self-employed fee.

If you have more than $400 gross income you MUST report it on the Sch C even if you have a net loss on the venture.

If you qualify you can use one of the 8 IRS FREE FILE options  ... for 2021 your AGI had to be $73K or less …

There are factors to consider when determining if you have to file a 2021 return.

Since you have calculated your self-employed income (net earnings) to be negative you may not need to file if none of these conditions apply:

  • You had $400 or more in self-employment net earnings (gross income minus expenses); or
  • You had marketplace health insurance and you received advanced payments for the premium tax credit.
  • If you're not being claimed as a dependent on another tax return please see the chart Do I need to file a federal return this year?

If you're being claimed as a dependent on someone else's 2021 return, like your parents', go to Do I need to file my own taxes if I'm a dependent?
