Generally a 1099-MISC with income reported in box 3 or 7 is considered self-employment income as far as the IRS is concerned. But there are rare exceptions. What box is the money reported in, and why were you paid that money?
the only box with $in it is box 3 and the money was an award check from a foundation where I work.
Since it's not earned income, enter it as below.
Reporting 1099-MISC (box 3 or box 7) that is not self-employment income
Under the Wages & Income tab (or Personal Income tab) scroll down to Other Common Income and elect to start/update Income from form 1099-MISC. Then click YES to indicate you have a 1099-MISC.
Enter the 1099-MISC exactly as printed, and then Continue.
Enter the reason you got this money – be it scholarship, bonus, streaking butt naked across the 50 yard line of the super bowl, whatever. Then continue.
Select None of these apply, then Continue.
Select No, it didn’t involve work….. and Continue.
Select ONLY the tax year for which this specific 1099-MISC was issued. Do not select the year that you received the 1099. Select the year for which the 1099-MISC was issued. Select no other year. Then Continue.
Select No, it didn’t involve an intent to earn money, then Continue.
Select NO, then Continue.
Click the DONE button, and that does it.
this is what I did and no schedule c was produced but I am still being asked to pay for Self employed version. I don't want to clear my whole return if it will just happen again.
Unless you want to pay for the SE version (which I don't think you need) you have no choice but to clear and start over. Then pay attention to the small print on the screens so that you do not indicate you have any self employment income reported to you on a 1099-MISC.
Is there a way to retain the its deductible section so I don't have to input all that item by item? I thought there was some way to save that during the year and input it at tax time!
I did this exactly...the first time. It is still giving me a Schedule C.
Until you delete the originally entered 1099-MISC *AND* delete the SCH C, this will continue. I don't know how to delete the SCH C with online. But basically you have to elect to edit/start Businss Income & Expenses (SCH C) and when you see your business listed there, click the DELETE button next to it, to delete it.
I got royalties from oil rights in my 1099-MISC , it had my payment on (Line 2: Royalties) I put it in (Line 7: Nonemployee compensation)
It bypassed all the self-employment crap and I was able to choose oil rights as the reason why I was compensated.
No extra turbo tax fees either.
So I'm having issues with a 1099 misc I'm not self employed and part of my wage is what they call fringe itsipart of my prevailing wage ( its the benefit package paid in cash) and my employer sends it to a third party in Ohio and i live and work in Oregon anyway the third party is who sends me the 1099 , they also take out federl taxes
Fringe benefits are generally included in an employee's gross income (there are some exceptions). The benefits are subject to income tax withholding and employment taxes. The laws have changed a good bit the last few years. You should not be receiving cash benefits on a 1099-MISC. Please review Publication 15-B (2021), Employer's Tax Guide to Fringe. It may be I am not understanding the situation or your employer is not aware of the changes.
To enter other income that is non-cash:
My question is similar. My husband annually receives a benefit from his worker's union that is basically the cost of the benefit that is provided free by the union. It's reported on 1099-MISC. He is retired now, but has always received this benefit even when he was still working.
I entered the 1099-MISC by going to Other Income and selecting 1099-MISC. Because it didn't fall into the other categories (farm income or other income like prize winnings), it prompted me whether he received it in prior years and expects it this year or if it is just this year. As soon as I indicate he has received it in prior years and expects it next year, it begins treating it as self-employment income, and TurboTax prompts me to answer questions related to self-employment income that aren't relevant and don't make sense for this type of income.
With the help of one TurboTax Live's accountants, I deleted the Schedule C, which seemed to work at first. We looked at the Federal Review, and there were no issues. However, I have since added self-employment income of my own, and now I keep getting a flag on Box 3 that wants a Schedule C for my husband's 1099-MISC. It's income, but not self-employment income, and I can't seem to get around this. Any suggestions?
I think I've answered my own question...
... As soon as I indicate he has received it in prior years and expects it next year, [TurboTax] begins treating it as self-employment income [and] prompts me to answer questions related to self-employment income that aren't relevant and don't make sense for this type of income...
That's actually the answer. Even though he receives it every year, I should only select that he received it this year. I learned in another topic that this is a workaround to TurboTax. I don't think it actually changes anything on the return except it doesn't generate a Schedule C.
I follow these instructions but it’s still taking me to a schedule Se. I am not self-employed
At this point:
You simply need to enter your 1099-MISC as the information is shown on the form, including info in box 6 of the form.
To do this in TurboTax Online you can follow these steps:
I have deleted other income and started over adding a 1099 Misc. I am a college intern for a company and they sent me the 1099 Misc. I'm not self employed nor do I have a tax code to complete the schedule C that it keeps taking me to. Also, how do you access directly to the forms and input the amount on the correct line without having to go through the interview questions? How is this reported?
Here are the steps to enter your 1099-MISC:
4. On the screen, "Did you get a 1099-MISC?" answer "Yes."
5. Enter the 1099-MISC.
6. Continue > Done.
