I had taxes due for the state of Indiana. I chose to have it paid through Turbo Tax directly from my bank account. A week later it still hasn't come out.

I vaguely recall last year that the State of Indiana couldn't be paid by Turbo Tax directly and I had to paid directly through the Indiana website. Has anyone else experienced this? Should I wait or go ahead and pay through state website?

No, don't wait. The state of IN does not have a direct debit option via your tax return e-filing.  When you filed your IN state tax return, TurboTax would have told you the various options

You have several options to pay your amount due:

  • Send in a payment by the due date with a check or money order.
  • Make a payment online with INTIME by electronic check (bank/ACH - no fees) or debit/credit card (fees apply)
  • Make a payment in person at one of DOR’s district offices or downtown Indianapolis location using cash (exact change only), personal or cashier’s check, money order, and debit/credit cards (fees apply).
  • Set up a payment plan, if you owe more than $100, using INTIME.

Be sure to have the following information available when you call:

  • Your taxpayer identification number or Social Security number
  • The liability number or warrant number.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, TurboTax did give me the option to pay my taxes due and had me provide routing and bank account information. I had forgotten that the same thing happened last year and since I paid closer to the deadline, my payment was late because of it. It sounds like the TurboTax web application needs to be updated to not allow this option for Indiana.

Greatly appreciate your guidance. I will use one of the options you listed.

I had the same experience.  The software had me input my bank account and routing numbers and gave the impression that they would facilitate payment.  I didn't receive the options described above.  I just received a letter saying that I owe them the balance plus penalty and interest.    Turbotax totally dropped the ball on this one. Definitely not acceptable.

If you also owed the feds then that is what you put the DD info in for but not for the state.  Save a PDF of the return with the worksheets and look at the state filing instructions that you were to follow ... the same instructions would have been shown on the screen in the interview ...

If you have filed your federal tax return and it has been accepted by the IRS -

This definitely just happened to me as well...just got a notice with an $1,050 penalty attached to it for not paying...thanks TurboTax!

Just to follow up...I called TT this morning, and had spoke to a rep, then an escalation specialist, and finally a CPA...I was on the phone with them for 140 min...they admitted that this is an issue, they apologized and then basically said, in the future, print the 118 page return and instructions and read every line...How about you fix your software! ughhhh

Please don't print 118 pages however you should always save the PDF of the return with the worksheets to your computer  and review the entire return before you file it using the PDF reader function ... if you have questions ask them before you file.

Yeah, I'm not printing it...but also, if I selected Pay By Direct Debit from my bank account and entering my bank account and routing information, do I really need to go back and check to make sure the software didn't revert to pay by check? No I shouldn't...fix the glitch.

Same issue here.  One of the options TT gave me to pay my INDIANA state taxes was via my bank account so I put my routing/checking numbers in.  That was it.  THEN I got a screen telling me I'm not done but that I have to MAIL IN a POST FILING COUPON to INDIANA for the amount due - along with a check.  REALLY?   WHY HAVE THE withdrawel OPTION if that's not an option?  Please fix this issue ASAP!

This happened again this year. Got a notification from TT during the checkout process that my Federal and State taxes would be debited from my bank account on 4/18, however I also got a paper check payment voucher. I do not want to pay this twice nor do I want to pay it late. Very frustrating!

The payment will be taken from your bank account for the state of Indiana. Do not pay with a paper check payment voucher. The payment date is scheduled for 4/18 and that date has not passed.

Payments have been deducted from bank accounts for Indiana and yours will be also.

"After I filled out all the bank ACH info, I got a message saying something like “you’re not finished until you print out and send this form”, which was a voucher to send with a payment. But before I sent the payment, I came here to see if I could get clarification. Then a day later I noticed that my payment had been deducted from my bank account. So I think the online payment worked. I hope. "

"I had the same issue. I just saw that Indiana tax payment has been debited from checking account. Is the system now working? "

Same issue.  It appears direct bank withdrawl/payment is FIXED with INDIANA  "if you enter the bank account/routing number now."  😉  It is not an issue when doing your 2022 taxes in April (2023).  So glad since it was CONFUSING one year ago.  We got a late notification in July last year (2022) and paid a penalty.  This tax system requires an advanced degree to complete.  Fix that first.

Thank you for responding. I was so confused as well and getting ready to send a duplicate payment.

Ok - so to be clear:

1. The taxes I filed for myself and my family for Indiana state are done and e-filed

2. I chose to have the owed taxes directly debited from our accounts

3. The taxes are paid, and I do NOT need to mail in the post-payment coupon that the website told me I needed to print and mail in

4. I will NOT get any late fees for the taxes I believe I have now paid.

Is this all correct? Just want to be clear, as I cannot afford to pay this twice right now.

Thank you!

@DaisyJaine

First the taxes are not paid until you see the payment withdrawn from your bank account.

Next save a PDF of the return and review the filing instruction page to see exactly how you choose to pay your fed/state balance due.  And if you owed on the 2022 return the payment vouchers you see may be for 2023 estimated payments and not the 2022 balance due so read those carefully since they look simular.

Check the printout or PDF of your return; look for the state cover sheet with the Turbotax logo. If you owed tax, it will show the payment information and how/when you decided to pay. Read the state payment instructions carefully since most states cannot be paid from within the TT system and requires additional steps.

Good morning,

It would be really nice if we could get a clear answer from the tax professionals. I elected to have my Federal and State taxes direct debited from my bank account on 4/18. Before I could finish filing I was instructed to print a payment voucher for my state taxes. I did this.

Today is 4/18: My Federal Payment was made overnight, my State Payment WAS NOT. I was told by both TT and IN DOR that this payment would be made electronically.  grrrr

Same situation here... Federal payment was debited overnight, state payment has not been debited. Can we please get confirmation that Indiana taxes WILL be paid??

This is correct.  Today is April 18, 2023 and my Indiana taxes due were successfully withdrawn from my checking account as I'd requested.  I did not need to mail in my paper check.  I think TT has fixed this issue.

What does that mean for those of us whose tax payments haven't been withdrawn?

My TIAAA bank hasn’t posted a deduction for Fed and State yet. It was an APR 18th withdrawal according to TurboTax. The Govt better get it soon, or I’m spending it.

UPDATE: Wednesday morning (4/19/23): withdrawal posted. IN and fed taxes paid. Done and fixed. Woohoo.

So, same question as everyone else.... I selected direct-debit to pay IN state taxes, and also was told to print out the Post Filing Coupon. I did download my return, and I do have a Indiana form IT-8453OL "Declaration of Electronic Filing," which does include my routing and account numbers. Even tho the money has not been withdrawn yet, based on that form, I should be all set, correct?

Turbotax really needs to fix this tho. This is really confusing.

Thanks,

John

It is not unusual if the payment postings are delayed at the IRS or the state tax departments, even if you post the date in advance when you file.
