I had a very basic return this year and the automated system (the same one which fails to inform you that you can only file your state taxes if you pay TurboTax AFTER finishing your state return) upgraded me to deluxe without my consent or knowledge. When it was time to check out, I had no other option to select.
If you advertise as free, there should be a way to use your product for free. Throw in all the predatory charges and hidden subscriptions (credit karma) you want, but don't falsely advertise a product that is impossible to qualify for.
This reads exactly like my own experience! Turbo Tax misrepresented itself this year and really got away with highway robbery.
Please reach out to TurboTax Customer Support to have someone review the fees with you.

Hello, I was charged 79.99 taken right out of my acct,...BEFORE I even got all my info put in!!... This place is for the $$ first, then customer service!... I'm pretty sure I WONT see a penny back...I WONT file my taxes through Turbo tax, ...I've emailed every place I could find to tell them to recheck their info...and put my money back in my bank, so far, NOTHING! But I will let everyone know if they responded...or not!!

@Sharibab An amount of $79 is not listed as one of the TurboTax online or desktop editions.

Additionally, if you used one of the TurboTax online editions you were not required to pay for the online account fess until after you had completed the tax return and were in the File section of the program in Step 1. And only then after you had reviewed the amount being charged were you asked to pay with a credit or debit card or to have the TurboTax account fees paid from the federal tax refund.

Was it out of your bank account OR a credit card charge? You have to pay Turbo Tax fees by credit card. If it came directly out of a bank account what is the description or payee on it?
It was directly out of my bank acct., by way of debit visa. Yes, it was my name, and the bank wants me to go directly to them before they will get involved....the problem is notifying them!
Do you work for turbo tax??... And are you in any authority to refund the $79.99 I was charged for getting half of my forms filled out, NEVER filed, and was Charged... ??... Then please look up my acct ,and you will see, or I'll screenshot a receipt for what turbo tax charged me...$79.99. Thanks.

Most of us here do not work for Turbo Tax. We are just other users like you who volunteer here. An employee will say employee or expert or moderator by their name.
Oh and you should always assume when you enter your credit or debit card anywhere on the internet you will be charged right then. In Turbo Tax you can pay early before you are ready to file to lock in an early price before the prices go up (usually on March 1).
I got charged over 200 dollars when I only committed to a very limited version of turbo tax. My tax returns were only 607 now I am only get half of that because Turbo tax charged me 270. I am very upset.

At any time before paying you could have cleared the tax return and started over with a lower priced edition.
The TurboTax Free online edition is for very simple tax returns that do not require any other form or schedule other than the Form 1040. If your tax data requires entry on any other form or schedule then you must upgrade to the Deluxe edition or higher.
If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over with a lower priced edition. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2022 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.
Hi Chelsea, I totally get it!... People say they don't charge you till filed, but that's just B.S.!... I as you read was charged , and never even filled the forms out first! So... Go to h&r block.... their much better...AND you can get a hold of someone, you can't at Turbo Tax...Good luck to you! Shari
Same here. Now it's impossible to get a human to ask questions. Will not use them next for this reason and I tell everyone I know to go elsewhere.

I had the same exact thing happened to me this year! I've been using TurboTax for a while and I have credit Karma so I went through that to go through TurboTax. I qualified to do it free because I only had a simple tax return with one W-2 single no dependents very basic, and as I got to the very end there was two charges of $39 each to file and at that point I just wanted to get my taxes done because I need money so I just went through with it because that was my only option. What it came down to was last year I used TurboTax filed unemployment and 1099, TurboTax apparently decided to just do my file under deluxe as it did last year because I needed to so therefore they charged me the same for this year automatically (what you think that they have this thing so accurate and it walks you through everything and knows exactly what you should and shouldn't do) it's just caught on that I didn't need deluxe especially after it approved me to be qualified for a simple one! I've been back and forth trying to get my money back beings it was 100% their fault not mine and they continue to send the same email back to me saying that it's not under their guaranteed policy fine print whatever just a bunch of BS so they don't have to pay for their wrongdoing! They want to 100% guarantee everything else but they don't want to 100% guarantee refunds for their own screw up which really has me pissed and I'm not going to use them anymore! If anyone has any information for me to go and move further with this situation could you please let me know because I'm not going to let it go! They're not just going to take almost $100 of mine after stating that it's a simple tax and qualified for free filing! I agree they lie and that's exactly what they did to me stick you at the very end!
Same thing happened to me and I was furious. You have the option of downgrading the product from the left side menu at the bottom (which you shouldn't have to click if you chose the free version). It's there and so incredibly deceiving and irritating that they upgrade you even if you don't need it or consent.
They just did this to me too. I said no at least twice, and still got charged for it. I’m trying to get in contact for my money back. I never used it.
If you have been upgraded and didn't need it you can downgrade your TurboTax product. Here is how.
I was charged for TurboTax Deluxe and two additional states, but I did not use or file anything through the Deluxe version. I did not intend to purchase this upgrade and was directed there by the program without clear indication that additional charges would apply.
