I entered the wrong IP PIN the first time I efiled my federal return and the return was rejected. I corrected the PIN and refiled and the return is still being rejected.

The first pin was the one for 2021. I changed it to the 2022 PIN for my 2021 return and tried to refile and it was still rejected. I got the 2022 PIN directly from the IRS website recently so I know it is correct. Also, even though the feds rejected my return my credit card was billed for the tax payment!

What is the rejection code you received?

IND-181-01 (Identity Protection Personal Identification Number). Turbotax also says "Your California return was rejected because of the errors on your federal return."

Did you enter the 6 digit IP PIN you received from the IRS in the correct TurboTax location?

To enter a 6 digit IP PIN

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Other Tax Situations
  • Scroll down to Other Return Info
  • On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button

Or enter ip pin in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ip pin

If you did and the IRS still is rejecting the tax return for the IP PIN then your only option is to print and mail your tax returns.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for printing a tax return for mailing when using the online editions - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/printing/help/how-do-i-print-and-mail-my-return-in-turbotax-online/00/26258

I did that and it still wouldn't transmit. I guess I'll have to file a paper return. However, since the IRS already billed my credit card for the tax payment do I need to include a note of explanation with my paper return to refer them to my credit card payment so they don't bill me again?

No, an explanation is not required.  Your tax payment will be in your tax account on the IRS website.

When in the File section of the program when asked how you want to pay the federal taxes owed indicate that you will be paying by check.  Then when the return is printed for mailing do not include a check or use the Payment Voucher Form 1040-V.
