I don't want to buy another macbook, but I can not update to OS to run turbotax 2020. Is there a work around?

You could use online software if your OS does not meet the system requirements for the desktop software for 2020.

System Requirements for 2020 for a Mac

Mac CD/Download Products

Operating Systems

  • macOS Mojave 10.14 or later

RAM

  • 2 GB or more recommended

Hard Disk Space

  • 1 GB for TurboTax

Monitor

  • 1024x768 or higher recommended

Internet Connection

  • 1 Mbps modem (Broadband connection highly recommended). Required for product activation, software updates and optional online features

Printer

  • Any Macintosh-compatible inkjet or laser printer

If you cannot use the TurboTax software on your personal computer and you have purchased the software from TurboTax, request a refund.  The TurboTax desktop editions and the TurboTax online editions are separate programs with different price points.

Go to this TurboTax website to request a refund for the software purchased from TurboTax - https://support.turbotax.intuit.com/forms/refund-request.jsp
Use this TurboTax website to check your orders and payments -

@Peter1x Please explain.  Did you purchase 2020 desktop software?  Did you download/install it to your own hard drive?  Did you enter the license code?  If you did those things, then you do not "log in" to online TurboTax and pay again to prepare your tax return.  You open up the program that is ON your own hard drive and use it.

Did you inadvertently start your return in the wrong program online instead of using the desktop software you paid for?

Partition your hard drive and install a newer version of Mac OS on the partition.  Then install the 2020 TurboTax on the new partition.  OS 10 (Catalina) works.

Hold the option key down at startup to choose with partition you want to use.

Catalina is not necessary.   TurboTax will run just fine in Mojave (10.14) but even 10.14 cannot be installed on older Macs which is probably the posters issue

OSX 10.14 requires:

  • MacBook, early 2015 or newer
  • MacBook Air, mid 2012 or newer
  • Mac Mini, late 2012 or newer
  • MacBook Pro, mid 2012 or newer
  • iMac, late 2012 or newer
  • iMac Pro, 2017
  • Mac Pro, late 2013, and mid 2010 an mid 2012 where equipped with Metal-capable GPU
