Yes, your employer is supposed to have you fill out a Form W-4 when you start working, assuming that you are an employee and you receive a W-2 form.

Since you didn't have enough taxes withheld last year, you should complete a new W-4 form as soon as possible and get some taxes withheld from every paycheck.

Here's how to do that in TurboTax:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.
  2. Select Other Tax Situations. If you have already filed your return, select Add State to get back into your return.
  3. Expand Other Tax Forms and find Form W-4 and Estimated Taxes, select Start or Revisit to the right.
  4. Answer Yes to the question Do you want to change your W-4 withholdings for 2024?
  5. Answer the questions in this section based on your situation.
  6. Print your Form W-4 when you are done and give it to your employer.

If you are a contractor instead of an employee, and receive a 1099-K or 1099-NEC, you will need to estimate the amount of tax that you owe and pay it quarterly. Follow this link to learn more about that.

You will have to file taxes and pay the amount you owe.  If needed you can set up a loan with the IRS.  Make sure you fill out W4 and that your employer is taking out taxes from now on.

If you owe tax due, you have to pay it yourself by the filing deadline on April 15, 2024.

If you have federal tax due you can pay by mailing your payment with the 1040V voucher, (which has the address printed on it, having the payment taken out of a designated bank account, or you can pay directly on the IRS website.

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

If you're being paid as an independent contractor (meaning your income is reported to you on a 1099-NEC rather than on a W-2), then you must make quarterly estimated tax payments to the IRS, and also to your state if your state has an income tax.
