I already filed and didn't realize I had a 1099C coming in.

I got a 1099C for debt cancelation and I've already filed my taxes. What should I do?

Your next steps depend on whether your filed return is accepted or rejected by the IRS.

If your return is rejected, you can simply add your 1099-C before you re-submit your tax return.

If your filed return is accepted by the IRS, you will need to file an amended return to add your 1099C.

You should wait until your already-filed tax return has been processed (i.e., refund received or payment deducted from your bank account). Then, you can use TurboTax to prepare an amended return.

If you have used Turbo Tax to file your return, just go back in and file an amended return with the 1099C.

If you received a Form 1099-C, you generally must include this in your income. Since you have already filed your taxes, you will need to amend your tax return.

You will need to wait until your return is accepted by the IRS before you can amend it. Please see the following steps to file an amended return:

  1. Log into TurboTax and click on "Tax Home"
  2. Scroll down to Your tax return & documents (you may need to select Show), select 2019 and then Amend (change) return.
  3. Select Amend using TurboTax Online

To enter your 1099-C, please follow these steps:

  1. Click on Federal from the menu on the left-hand side
  2. Click on Wages and Income at the top
  3. Scroll down to Less Common Income
  4. Click Start on Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C
