My wife and I are covered under a high deductible health plan and I contributed near the maximum amount through my payroll deduction. That seemed to be recorded in my W-2. I have completed the Deductions & Credits section of Turbo Tax but the $8,085 that I contributed does not show up on the summary of Deductions & Credits. It does show that I received the deduction in 2020. Is there an income cut-off for this deduction?
Most likely the $2,000 reported on the W-2 is not included in Box 1 of the W-2 form, therefore it is not deductible.
In TurboTax Online Premier version, I reported an HSA deduction of $2,000 on the taxpayer's W-2 but $0 is reported on the page Federal / Deductions & Credits / Your tax breaks.
When I report an HSA deduction of $500 personally made (not through your employer) at the screen Let's enter your HSA contributions, that amount is reported at the page Federal / Deductions & Credits / Your tax breaks.
This TurboTax Help states:
The limit to your HSA contribution is the lesser of your health plan deductible or IRS-prescribed limits. For 2021, the IRS limit is $3,600 for singles, or $7,200 for families. If you're over 55, you can put away an additional $1,000.
The TurboTax Help mentions no income limits.
While that answers my question about whether or not there are any income limits to the HSA deduction, it does not answer my primary question about why that HSA deduction does not appear in my summary of deductions. It does not appear to be deducted from my gross income.
Specifically: on Schedule 1, Part II (Adjustments to Income), line 13, I would expect to see the amount I contributed to my HSA ($8,085). Instead, I see no entry at on that line. Form 8889 seems to have the correct number but it is not being transferred to Schedule 1.
Most likely the $2,000 reported on the W-2 is not included in Box 1 of the W-2 form, therefore it is not deductible.
The explanation for line 13 on IRS Form 8889 Health Savings Accounts says:
Enter the smaller of line 2 or line 12 here and on Schedule 1 (Form 1040), Part II, line 13.
Line 2 reports the amount paid personally made (not through your employer) at the screen Let's enter your HSA contributions, that amount is reported at the page Federal / Deductions & Credits / Your tax breaks.
Line 12 reports the annual amount allowed for an HSA contribution minus the amount of employer contributions reported on your W-2.
What values are you reporting on line 2, line 12 and line 13?
