I got fired last year during the month of Feb. (after working there many years) from a job that provided HDHP medical insurance for my son, wife, and I. I also had an HSA as part of my health insurance. When I got fired, my wife was able to get retro-active insurance for us through her job so that we wouldn't have a gap in insurance coverage. She also got an HSA in her name. How would we answer what type of HDHP medical insurance we each got? Turbotax asks the following:
what type of HDHP coverage did X have during 2020?
I was covered by a Family plan every month of the year
I was covered by a Self only plan every month of the year
I had different plan types at different times of the year
I chose the last option. I am also asked what HDHP type of coverage I had- I selected Self Only for January and February and None for the rest of the months.
For my wife, I did the opposite (selecting None for the first 2 months, then putting Self Only). Are my answers correct? If so, I get asked about some HSA stuff about a prior year...
I would answer for both you and your spouse that
I was covered by a Family plan every month of the year
for the first two months, you were both covered by your Family HDHP. I assume she was not covered by another plan that was not an HDHP
for the last 10 months, it seems your family was covered by your spouse's HDHP.
the rule is that if either spouse had family coverage both spouses are treated as having family coverage.
You were covered by a family plan for the entire year. In Jan-Feb you had a family plan, from March-December you were covered by a family plan even though the plan was in your wife's name.
Your spouse was covered by a family plan for the entire year. In Jan-Feb she was covered by your plan and March-December she was covered by her own plan, but it was a family plan in both cases.
The question is "how were you covered", not "whose name was the plan in."
