How do you calculate your AGI?

The Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) calculation is relatively straightforward.

  • It is equal to the total income you report that’s subject to income tax—such as earnings from your job, self-employment, alimony income and interest from a bank account—minus specific deductions, or “adjustments” that you’re eligible to take.
  • Your AGI is calculated before you take exemptions and the standard or itemized deduction—which you report in later sections of the return.

For Example: If my income from my job and other income is $40,000 and my deductions is $5,000 then my AGI is $35,000 (which is reported on Form 1040 – Line 37  Form 1040A – Line 21  Form 1040EZ – Line 4  Form 1040NR – Line 36 and Form 1040X – Line 1, Column A).

Okay, your prior year AGI will be listed on your tax return from last year: Form 1040 – Line 37  Form 1040A – Line 21  Form 1040EZ – Line 4  Form 1040NR – Line 36 and Form 1040X – Line 1, Column A). Do you have a copy? Did you file with TurboTax last year or somewhere else?

Since we have taxes taken out of our SS payments, will that affect AGI?

No the SS withholding doesn’t affect your AGI.  Your AGI is one number from your tax return.

You would sign in, click on Take me to my return, then, Federal Taxes tab and the Deduction and Credits tab.

The problem is I had to make a different account because I forgot my password but I won't let me change it because I don't have my number I used anymore and the alternative way keeps saying something went wrong when I know I have all the correct info.

I need to find my current (2019) AGI so that I can determine if any medical expenses are deductible.  Where is that located in TurboTax with my current filing?  (I have not submitted to IRS yet, but everything else has been entered).

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary.  The 2019 AGI is shown in the Summary.
