How do I pause my state return until Turbo Tax has updated their site for the American Recovery Act? I never saw the option to file "later" like instructions indicated.

It takes me all the way through to "Transmit my returns now."

Thanks Michelle! With the help of Dorien at TurboTax, I have the answer:

  • Go to Review.
  • When you get to the screen titled Just one more step and we'll file your returns select Get ready to save and file your returns.
  • On the next screen (Let’s get ready to e-file) choose File By Mail. (Makes no sense, I know.)
  • Next to your state return on the next screen, select Change then on the following screen I'm not ready to file.
  • The next screen will list just your 2020 Federal return and you can go on to file your Federal return.

If you'd like to go ahead and file your federal return and file your state return later, please follow the instructions here: Can I file my federal taxes now and skip my state for later?

Thank you, Ashley. I've already paid for both. My problem is that I never saw a screen that said, "Here are your filing options."

Under File, I've made it to Step 3 Get ready to save and file your returns. After that, I have the following screens:

  • Let’s get ready to e-file
  • Last year's tax info
  • What type of state-issued ID does Jill have?
  • OK, let's get some details about Jill's driver's license
  • Consent to e-file your California return
  • Let’s take one last look at the returns you’re e-filing
  • It's time to sign and transmit your 2020 returns

The last one ends with a button that says, "Transmit my returns now" with a warning, "Important: Once you select Transmit my returns now, you can't cancel transmission. It's just like dropping your returns in the mailbox."

Please provide a link to the specific screen that says, "Here are your filing options."

Try to clear your browser's cache and delete cookies. A full or corrupted cache can keep TurboTax from functioning properly. If that doesn't work, try a different browser such as Safari or Firefox if you're currently using Chrome and vice versa.
