When filing your tax return the TurboTax program will let you know if you have taxes due or if you will be receiving a refund. If you wish to find out if you owe past taxes due. You can call the IRS toll-free telephone number: Individual taxpayers in the United States: 800-829-1040, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time.

To determine if a debt is owed, and whether an offset will occur, you can contact Treasury Offset Program Call Center at (800) 304-3107. Enter the required information and it will let you know if you have any existing debt on file.

This is NOT true!! I spoke with a representative at the IRS and was told that I OWE $233 instead of getting a refund like Turbo Tax said I was due to receive.  For whatever reason, Turbo Tax populated my line 30 for the Recovery Rebate when in fact I've received my stimulus checks.  Then also I was told because my daughter turned 17 at the end of 2020, there were certain credits I didn't qualify for.  I thought Turbo Tax would've caught these calculations but I guess not.

Yes, TurboTax does catch these calculations, but it cannot know if the original input is not right.

TurboTax would have calculated the return based on what was entered for stimulus payments and the age of dependents. It cannot know if that input is inaccurate.

The return must be amended. If you have state taxes, they must be amended as well. To Amend(change) your 2020 TurboTax Online return, follow these steps:

  • Open the return--you will be at Tax Home.
  • Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and Show.
  • Select 2020, and Amend(change) return.

Only after the amend process has been started, then, navigate to the Stimulus Payments section by following these steps:

  1. Go to the search box and enter stimulus. Click the Jump to link.
  2. Answer Yes.
  3. At the next screen, Let's double-check the amount you received, answer No to edit the first-round and second-round amounts.
  4. An amount must entered in each box. Report the stimulus payments as received When finished, click Continue.

Next, to correct your dependent's age:

  1. Go to the left menu and select My Info.
  2. Scroll to your daughter's info and select Edit by clicking the pencil icon.
  3. Edit her birth date and save/continue.

For more information, see: How do I amend my 2020 TurboTax Online return?

The amendment can be e-filed. The only states that offer e-file for amended returns are currently Georgia, Michigan, New York, and Vermont. Otherwise, the corresponding state amended return must be paper filed.
