How do I fix e-file reject code S1-F1040-396?

S1-F1040-396 - If the filing status of the return is married filing jointly and Form 1040, 'AdjustedGrossIncomeAmt' plus (+) Schedule 1 (Form 1040), 'StudentLoanInterestDedAmt' is greater than 170000, then 'StudentLoanInterestDedAmt' must be zero if an amount is entered.

For help fixing this e-file reject code:

1. Open your return.

2. If Form 1040 Line 2 “Married filing jointly” is checked, and the sum of Lines 37 and 33 is larger than $170,000, then remove the amount from Line 33 and adjust Line 37.

3. Before you e-file your return, go to Step 2, scroll down to Section 4, and enter the current date (“Today’s date”). Today’s date is the day you intend to e-file the return again.

If you are making an electronic payment, you must re-date that section. E-File your return.

What if I encounter this reject code yet lines 37 and 33 do not total 170,000?

First of all, which line 33 & 37 are you referring to?  Which Schedule/ Form does this appear on?

Try entering 0 for student loan interest amount and then see what happens.

The rejection was a known issue on the IRS side of processing returns.  The IRS was aware of the problem and has now resolved the rejection.  Any rejected returns can be resubmitted.
