How can I delete a blank 1099-NEC from turbotax online?

A blank 1099-NEC is showing up during the final review of my federal return, but I do not have any 1099-NECs. I think it's an import from my 2019 return, but does not apply in 2020.

If this form does not apply to you, you can simply remove it from the program.  Here are the steps:

In TurboTax online version:

1.  Sign into your account, select Pick up where you left off

2.  Select Tax Tools, click on the drop down arrow

3.  Select Tools

4.  Under Other helpful links, choose Delete a form

5.  Select Delete next to Form 1099-NEC and Continue with My Return

Beginning with the 2020 tax year, the IRS will require business taxpayers to report nonemployee compensation on the new Form 1099-NEC instead of on Form 1099-MISC. Businesses will need to use this form if they made payments totaling $600 or more to a nonemployee, such as an independent contractor.  This was done to help clarify the separate filing deadlines on Form 1099-MISC and the new 1099-NEC form will be used starting with the 2020 tax year.

I have that exact same situation myself. All of my 1099 gigs were cancelled last year and I don't have any to file, yet there is a blank one on my review and I don't want to submit because I'm concerned it may trigger a problem or something. I hope Turbotax sees our question.

My daughter ran into the same issue, so I forwarded your reply to her, which resolved the issue for both of us. Thank you!

I've done it 3 times. It will say the form is deleted yet it still keeps popping up everytime I do my final review

@Lambert905 Sometimes you can't delete the form using the shortcut method, often because it is linked to other forms. In that case, you need to revisit the business section in TurboTax, as if you still had the business in question. If you see the business listed there, there should be an option to delete it. If not, set up a new business by entering just the basic information requested, then go back in and delete it using the delete a form method and that may work.

I’m having the same problem. When I went to go “delete” it using the method above, I noticed it’s from Instacart which I haven’t done since 2019 🙄. I deleted it and it’s still popping up. I did have small Etsy business in 2021 BUT I made under $600 so I won’t be receiving a 1099-NEC ANYWAYS. I still report my income regardless. It’s still asking for that EIN for a blank 1099-NEC. What can I do? I just want my money 😭

Delete, tell the program NO to NEC, delete again.

  1. Pick a method and delete:
    • Inside the business income part of the program is a delete / trashcan icon beside the NEC to click.
    • On the left side, is the tools menu and you can select delete a form.
  2. When you delete the NEC, the program remembers the income form was there. So, you also need to walk through the business program and where it asks about NEC income, answer No.
  3. Probably delete the form again.

@sbarcus You can try entering a generic form 1099-Nec and when you are done go back in and delete it. Sometimes that will delete a blank 1099 form that is stuck in your program.
