If this is in your state return, your social security income should be entered in the federal part of the return and then it will carry over into your state return.  Please check in the Federal return, under Wages and Income, then Retirement Plans and Social Security, and make sure the number is correct there, as in the image below.

If this is in your federal return and you are using TurboTax Online, the most likely reason for buttons that don't work or not being able to enter information is that something in the web browser is not displaying the page properly.  The easiest way around this is to simply use a different web browser.  You can select from Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and more.   If you need to install another browser, be sure to go to the trusted home site for the software, for security reasons. Or you can clear the cache and cookies in your current browser.  Click this link for a TurboTax Help Article Clear cache and cookies

If you are using the Turbo Mobile App, then try opening Turbo Tax in the browser window on your phone.  It will use the same login information but may display the page better.

@longstarr

Are you using the Desktop software?

IF so, when you go into the SSA-1099 section to fill out the actual form  ....IF...if there is a $0 in any field, then there is a Supporting Details sheet attached to that field from last year.  Double click on the "$0" and the SuppDet sheet should show up

.....you can either make an entry in the worksheet, or delete the SuppDet sheet entirely and regain access to the normal entry line.

This year my wife started to draw on her Social Security. I am using the desktop version of TurboTax on a Windows 10 laptop, but when I click on the update button on the line for Social Security and Railroad Retirement, I just get a blank screen. I was getting blank screens for some of the other forms of income, but the import from previous years allowed me to go to the Forms, and make my entries there. Since this is the first year for me to need to enter Social Security income, there is no existing form.  I have a feeling that Intuit needs to patch this glitch.

This should not be a problem, I am sorry you are having an issue and would like to look into your problem.

You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information.  If you would like to do this, here are the instructions:

If you are online, go to tax tools>tools > share file with agent > 6 digit number pops up.

If on desktop, go to online >send tax file to agent > number pops.

@alexjdavid5 The problem did not come over for me. Your return is just fine in my desktop program. Let's do this:

  1. Your .data file is fine. You should have a saved copy of your return (.data file) on your computer. When you click to save your return, the .data file is created.
  2. Be sure your program is completely updated. Go to Online, then select Check for Updates.
  3. If the problem persists, you need technical support. My guess is that you will need to download the program since I believe your program is corrupt. Customer service can help you. Let them know you have a corrupt program and need the download version when you Contact Us. Be at your computer, they may have other knowledge and can come in and check your program with your permission.
  4. Once you have a working program, you can select to open the return that you have saved from step 1.

Your program is missing information in the step-by-step section. I see where some information was entered in the forms mode. To enter the Social Security, you will need to use the step-by-step interview process.

  1. Go to personal income and scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security.
  2. Select Social Security and Start. Yours was marked to start rather than update so the program does not know you were ever there.
  3. Did you receive benefits? Select Yes
  4. Select Social Security box
  5. The form appears for you to fill in

You will need to go through the step-by-step process and do the reviews to make sure the program is happy and functioning as intended.

Spent an hour and a half with a very fine technical person who generated a new download for me, but it still didn't solve the problem.  How can I be the only person who has encoutered this glitch?  I would be willing to provide information to support a trouble ticket so this can be solved with a software patch.

Did the Tech folks have you try running TTX in "Compatibility Mode" for Windows 8?

Sometimes running it as-if you were using the prior OS version of Windows will work.

Rt-click on the shortcut Icon

Click on Properties

Click on the Compatibility tab

Check the box for Compatibility Mode, and select Windows 8.

(that's just a guess to try)

IF that doesn't work, then I suspect you are experiencing an extreme case of the following loooooong post....all resulting from all of the software rewrites that TTX did to the desktop software in the past year (including the SSA section)....and they haven't ID'd that problem yet, and if they have, it will probably require full software rewrites of several sections which won't get done for months, if at all for 2021 taxes:

Steamtrain, you were right about trying compatibility mode with Windows 8.  I never saw that before, but fumbled my way through the various prompts, and it is working!  Thanks so much.

Wow...that was pretty much a shot in the dark.

Sure hope TTX fixes that problem by next year, but by then the software may not be compatible with W8.

I use W10 too, but only see a slight slowdown when entering the newly-written software sections.....and didn't' need to try W8 compatibility.

This was a suggestion that was successful if you are using TurboTax CD/Download version.

See if this will help - Save your tax return.  Close the TurboTax program.

Right click on the TurboTax 2021 icon on your computer screen.

Click on Run as Administrator

Start the TurboTax program and continue your tax return.  See if the problem has been resolved.

If you are using TurboTax Online try removing all the cache and cookies.  Close TurboTax before you begin.

This is a suggestion that has worked for others using TurboTax CD/Download version.

See if this will help - Save your tax return.

  1. Close the TurboTax program.
  2. Right click on the TurboTax 2021 icon on your computer screen.
  3. Click on Run as Administrator
  4. Start the TurboTax program and continue your tax return.
  5. See if the problem has been resolved.

The "run as administrator" tip is so good. It worked! I spent over three hours on the phone with a Turbo Tax "expert" last night. He even provided me with a new downloaded program. Never could get it to work. It kept giving me a blank screen at the Social Security income.

Was doing a little research myself and ran across your tip. It worked, taxes are done.

Thank you,

Karen

I now have the issue where I cannot enter my social security income in the 2022 version of TTX. I'm running Windows 10 with a downloaded version of TTX Premier for 2022. For the 2022 tax year, I am a first-time receiver of social security benefits and I cannot enter my benefits through the step-by-step view. When I click on "Update", TTX displays a blank form. I tried the Windows 8 fix mentioned earlier but that did not work for me.

I know this issue also existed in the 2021 version because I tried to preview my 2022 taxes using the 2021 software. Like the earlier user in this thread, I too am surprised that there aren't a lot more people with this issue.  That the issue persists into the 2022 version now has me at a stand-still. This needs a fix - not a workaround.

It depends.  Did you perform the following steps?

  1.  Federal taxes
  2. Wages and income
  3. Retirement plans and Social Security.
  4. Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099)
  5. Start

I tested my program and it worked. The only other issue might be is if your software came on a disk. If so, you may wish to download your program from the intuit website.

Yes I did perform the steps that you've specified with one difference: Instead of a START button, an UPDATE button is displayed. Also, TTX displays that I had $0 social security income for 2021.

BTW, I'm using the latest downloaded version with online updates applied, not a CD.

@pjbnorth

The zero $ for 2021 (on the main menu) depends on what file you transferred in from 2021...if the SS was empty in your real 2021 file, and you transferred your correct  .tax 2021 file in to a new 2022 file, then then the 2021 value in the menu should show a zero.  (and...Don't use a test 2021 file to transfer in, make sure it is your real .tax2021 datafile...from whatever system you prepared it on last year).  So, since you didn't have SS income last year, there shouldn't be any SS $ for 2021 on the main menu.

Now, one thing you may need to do is to shut down and reboot your computer.  A windows update was issued last night, and if partially-installed but not completed....that is known to block some entries in TurboTax....sometimes stops it from starting up altogether.

So check for that Windows update, get it installed, then reboot yoru computer before trying to work with TTX again.

And don't run in compatibility mode with Windows 8.  2022 TurboTax isn't supposed to run on Windows 8

The 2021 carryover numbers do not affect your 2022 tax return.

I suggest you delete the Social Security Worksheet form and try to re-enter your information.

In the Online version

  1. On the menu bar on the left that shows.
    1. My Info
    2. Federal
    3. State
    4. Review
    5. File
  2. Select Tax Tools
  3. On the drop-down select Tools
  4. On the Pop-Up menu select Delete a Form
  5. This will give you all of the forms in your return.
  6. Scroll down to the form you want to delete.
  7. Select the Form Social Security Worksheet
  8. Click on Delete.
  9. Always use extreme caution when deleting information from your tax return.  There could be unintended consequences.

Go back to the input screen and try to enter it again.

I bought the TurboTax CD from Sam's (as I have for the last 12 yrs) and downloaded it on my compter.   It will not allow me to enter anything for SSA1099.  What do I do?

Expert Alumni

Form SSA-1099 reports your social security income. You woud enter that by following these steps in TurboTax:

1. Choose the Federal section of TurboTax

2. Choose Wages and Income

3. Choose Retirement Plans and Social Security

4. Choose Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099)

Can you clarify what happens when you try this?

I do the steps you suggested.. the form comes up.  When I click on the box to enter a number, a blue dot appears under it and you can't enter anything in the box.
