Has anyone successfully imported from Betterment? I can't get it to work and TurboTax Help is useless.

If you are not able to import your transactions into TurboTax, you can enter them manually. Here's how:

1) Once in your return, click Income & Expenses (top tabs)

2) Scroll down till you see Stocks, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other

3) Follow the prompts to add in your sales

I have also not been able to import from Betterment this year (2019 tax year). I am using TurboTax Desktop. In past years I had no problem, but for some reason this year is failing. According to what I have been able to find online, including the information on Betterment's site, there may be a problem if you have more than 1500 transactions for TurboTax online. TurboTax desktop, either has no limit or 2500 transactions (I see different answers on different sites). Either way, I should be well under all of those limits, so that should not be the problem.

@GiseleD 's proposed solution is simply untenable for even low hundreds of transactions, and I hope that this is only a temporary problem. If it is more than that, I may well be requesting a refund, as this is critical functionality.

Same problem. I'm using TurboTax Premier 2019 desktop version. I try to import from Betterment using a newly generated app password (as instructed by Betterment) and it says " This import was unsuccessful" - I never had a problem in previous years.

I also have the same problem with the Turbotax Desktop product. It is giving the following error "There isn't any tax-related info right now".  Importing from web version of Turbotax works successfully.

I am having this exact issue. Betterment, TurboTax Home and Business 2019 Desktop. "This import was unsuccessful. There isn't any tax-related info to import right now."

A lot of 1099 B forms are not available yet to import. Please see the TurboTax FAQ's below for more information:

How do I import my 1099?

When will I be able to import my 1099?

Which 1099 forms are not available for import?

If you continue to have issues and Betterment says the forms are available, contact customer service, start by clicking on Contact Us.  Answering the questions will help to ensure that your call is properly routed.

I am having this same issue using the desktop version. Has anyone been able to successfully import from Betterment?

I am having the same issue. I am using the desktop version of TurboTax for mac and have generated an app-specific password from Betterment, and still have had no luck importing my Betterment transactions.

I am having the same issue right now using online TurboTax Premier.

Here is the error message i am getting:

  • That didn’t work. Try signing in again. (103)

Here are a couple things to check:

    • Make sure there are no typos.
    • If you use auto-fills make sure it gets the right info.

Check your 1099-B transaction list to see how many wash sales you have.

As an active investor, be aware that your category Box A sales without adjustments do not require Form 8949, so there is no reason to import or key in those transactions.
Instead use the "enter a summary" option to put your numbers on Schedule D Line 1a.
--
If you have wash sales, it gets more complicated since those adjusted transactions have to be itemized on Form 8949 and the summary totals adjusted accordingly.

Enter the wash sales on Form 8949, then use the subtotal results on the bottom of that form to know how much to subtract. Be sure to NOT check the adjustments box in the summary window.

I was able to successfully import by generating an app specific betterment password for TurboTax. I am filing using TurboTax premier online.

All - I can confirm generating an App specific password solved my importing issues with Betterment. Should help solve issues with these complicated 1099-B.  Happy filing!

Yes, updating or creating an app password for TurboTax can often resolve the issue.

If others of you are still experiencing difficulties,

The issue with betterment import is specific to the desktop versions of the turbotax. The online version works fine. The desktop version gives the error when using the same app password which worked in the online version. I tried this yesterday also and it still did not work for the desktop version, so the issue is not fixed. The workaround I did is to do the import from betterment using online version and save the online tax return to a file and open it using the desktop version as a new return and redo all the other income and reductions.

This is correct. The desktop version is still not importing from Betterment.

Another option, type in 4 lines manually. Each line is the total for that type of transaction. The IRS has the same brokerage statement and totals.

Enter the totals for each:

  • short term covered
  • short term non-covered
  • long term covered
  • long term non-covered

After four support calls with TurboTax, we arrived at the workaround of using TurboTax Premiere online. I was able to successfully import my Betterment tax documents to the online version. I did not then download the TurboTax return to my desktop version as I would then be unable to use my 2018 return with my new 2019 return (cannot merge two returns with a new return). I had to stay with the TT Premiere online, upload my 2018 TT return, import Betterment forms, and re-enter all of my other 2019 tax information. Note that I have used TT Deluxe desktop for the past three years with no problems importing from Betterment, but had to upgrade to TT Premiere online in order to process my schedule D.

TurboTax support gave me codes for the free use of TT Premiere online in consideration of my being unable to use the TT Deluxe desktop app I had purchased.

I am glad you were able to upload and work through it. Thanks for the information!  @riche

Wanted to chime in and say that I ran into the same issue. I was originally using the Deluxe desktop app (on mac), then upgraded to the Premier desktop app but still faced the same issue. I was only able to get it working through the online Premier version, which Turbo Tax support helped me transfer my license to so I wouldn't have to buy it again.

You can't do this if your Betterment 1099-B has any wash sales, and they almost always do.  Wash sales require you to adjust any loss to zero on the form 8949.  Plus, you can only do this for short- and long-term covered securities.  Short- and long-term non-covered securities have to be listed on the form 8949.

@erickangel

Please see this Help Article from Betterment on importing.  Within the document, it has information about generating an App Password.
