Filing an extension for 2019

My tax due was 0 for 2018,  If I file an extension for 2019, do I have to pay any amount due with the extension request.  Will I be charged penalty and interest if I do owe?

You don't have to pay with the extension, but the tax is due on 07/15. So if you calculate a balance due later when you file, you will be hit with a late payment penalty and interest.

read the instructions. You're supposed to estimate your tax and pay all or part of that with your form 4868.

IRS:  "If you e-file Form 4868 and mail a check or money order to the IRS for payment, use a completed paper Form 4868 as a
voucher. Please note with your payment that your extension request was originally filed electronically."

I owe the IRS for 2019 and want to extend until October 15th.  How do I do this with TurboTax?

You can file an extension within the program itself.

  1. Log back into your TurboTax account and go to the federal section
  2. Select Other Tax Situations at the top of the screen
  3. Scroll down to Other Tax Forms
  4. Select File an Extension
  5. Proceed to answer the questions and follow the prompts to file your extension

You filed for an extension for my 2018 taxes.  Please do it again for 2019 due to illness.

You have to initiate the e-filing of an extension - https://turbotax.intuit.com/irs-tax-extensions/

If you have e-filed your federal extension request, see this TurboTax support FAQ for how to print the Form 4868 - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/printing/help/how-do-i-print-my-4868-extension-form-after-e-filing-it-through-turbotax-easy-extension/01/26520

The 2018 AGI is on the 2018 Federal tax return you filed Form 1040 Line 7

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/agi/help/how-do-i-find-last-year-s-agi/01/25947

To access your current or prior year tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the userID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on Show.  Click on the Year and Click on View adjusted gross income (AGI)

Or go to this IRS website for free federal tax return transcripts - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

If your tax return continues to be rejected with the 2018 AGI then enter a 0 (zero) for the AGI and e-file again.

If this is also rejected then you will have to print and mail the tax return.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for printing a tax return for mailing - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/printing/help/how-do-i-print-and-mail-my-return-in-turbotax-online...

To file an extension:

Keep in mind: An extension doesn't give you extra time to pay your taxes — but it will keep you from getting a late filing penalty. (You'll still owe interest if you pay after the deadline).

  1. Open your return in TurboTax Online. (To do this, sign in to TurboTax and select Pick up where you left off).
  2. Select File an extension at the bottom of the column on the left side of the screen.
    • If you don't see the File an extension button in Step 2 above, search for extend in the upper right and select the Jump to link at the top of your search results.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to e-file your extension.

Note: If you're paying additional taxes owed with direct debit, you'll need to provide your 2018 AGI for verification purposes (if you didn't file a 2018 return, enter 0 as your AGI).

If you don't have your AGI, or your extension gets rejected for the wrong AGI, here are 2 options:

  1. Recommended: Pay your taxes at IRS Direct Pay (this also automatically gives you an extension).
  2. Download and print Form 4868, fill it out, and get it postmarked before 11:59 p.m. July 15. Payment and mailing instructions are on pages 3 and 4 of your printout.

If you filed prior to the deadline, but were rejected, you have until July 20 to mail in your extension.

If I file for an extension and I owe roughly 1000$. I was assuming the IRS would still take the money on 7/15/2020, but they have not.

Or does the IRS only take money at the time I actually file my federal taxes, so for instance if I file 08/15/2020, I will owe roughly $1000 + (payment penalty and interest for 1 month)?

I'm asking because the IRS did not take money on 07/15/2020, and I want to know if I incorrectly did something.

The deadline for filing an extension was July 15.  Complete and file your tax return as soon as possible if you have taxes owed.  The failure to pay penalty and interest owed on the unpaid taxes continues to accrue.

@mullerc2

When you filed the extension did you explicitly request the payment to happen ?  If you did it can take several days for the IRS to catch up with the pile that was filed on last day.

If you did not request the debit correctly you can make a payment now on the IRS web site to stop the late payment penalties and interest from accruing ... then when you finally file the payment will be accounted for as a payment with extension.
