Error message when clicking file taxes?

I'm trying to e file my 2021 taxes. But i keep getting this message: "

Your transmission didn't go through

We could not e-file your return for the following reason:
Tax Year 2021 transmissions are not available.

".

I thought efile opened on January 24, 2022. I've checked my software for updates as well. Also all my taxes are correct and in order? I dont know what to do..

I got off with TurboTax support and they said they were aware of issues e-filing and that they were working on it and talking with other tax agencies.  Granted that is not very helpful in explaining the problem - it may indicate the issue is on the e-file side and not TurboTax (assuming that is true).

After doing some digging I think what the issue may be (pure speculation of course) is that while the IRS and Federal opened up e-filing on Jan. 24 - some of the states have delayed their acceptance dates for e-filing.  Presuming that TurboTax does a system check to ensure it can reach the servers for both federal and your state, the inability to do either would trigger a fail condition.  That said, the wording of the error is not great, so this could be completely wrong.

Don't know if links show up, but here is an example of a state that is delayed until 'Mid-February'

Had the same issue.  The last two sentences are the key to the answer.  Try filing your federal taxes without your state taxes.  In North Carolina the DOR is not ready to receive tax filings.  They say on their website that they are communicating that.  Must be because I don't watch the local news.  You may have to wait to file the state return until your state is ready to receive.  Should not be much longer.

If forms that are needed for your return to be processed by the IRS are not yet ready, you will not be able to transmit it. Please check this IRS forms availability table to make sure all the forms you need are available to be e-filed. Here is the forms availability table for the state of North Carolina

I had the same issue with NC; apparently NC delayed electronic transmissions of tax returns until 2/17/22. I submitted today (2/19/22), and appears that everything went through.

The North Carolina Individual Income Tax Return Form D-400 is not yet available for e-filing.  It is estimated to be available on 02/24/2022

Go to this TurboTax website for North Carolina state forms availability - https://care-cdn.prodsupportsite.a.intuit.com/forms-availability/turbotax_nc_online_individual.html

If you want to e-file your federal tax return now then change how you file the NC state return.  This assumes that all of the forms and schedules included in your federal tax return are available for e-filing.

If using the TurboTax online editions click on File on the left side of the online program screen.  On Step 3 of the File section click on Start or Revisit.  Select the button File by Mail.  Then change the filing status of the state return.

After the federal return is e-filed and accepted by the IRS you can e-file the state return when it is available for e-filing.  Just use the same procedure and change the state return back to e-filing.
