Exact when will TurboTax Desktop 2025 no longer work on Windows 10?
The TurboTax announcement is vague. It notes that Microsoft support for Windows10 ends Oct. 14, 2025 but seems to imply that Desktop 2025 might stop working on Windows 10 right now.
The Desktop program for 2025 doesn't come out until November 2025. You won't even be able to install it on Windows 10. Right now we have the 2024 program installed. 2024 and prior will still work on Windows 10 and will even work on Windows 11.
The program I bought in a store, downloaded and have installed is called TurboTax Desktop 2024. Turbo Tax says the new product will be called Turbo Tax Online 2025 and says it won't come out until December. So my question should have said: Does Turbo Tax's Aug. 20 email about ending the ability to use TurboTax Desktop 2025 in Windows 10 also apply to TurboTax Desktop 2024 and take effect Oct. 14, 2025 when Microsoft ends support for Windows 10 or does it take effect right now as the company email seems to imply?
I got the Aug 20 email. Read it again slowly. It says if you don't have Windows 11 you can switch and use the Online version. They will still have the Desktop program. Online is not a new product.
No the email does not apply to 2024. As I said above you can continue to use 2024 and prior year Desktop programs on Windows 10.

If you used the Desktop program before you may notice several differences and not like the online version. It has less features and no Forms Mode. You can only do 1 return per account. You can have 5 accounts for the same email address. You have to pay for each return. Federal and state are separate fees.
Your return is only saved online so be sure to save both the .tax2025 data file and the pdf file to your computer when you are done. In case you need to amend in the future or if you need a copy to get a loan or something. You might not be able to access your online return when you need a copy.
