Does receiving no assistance from either parent, haven't lived with either in years, and making more than both combined make me independant?

Im 20 years old and live in NC

Yes, you no longer qualify as either's dependent. You are a Single filer.

Since you are age 20, here is the test:

You can only claim a qualified relative if

·       You provided more than half of their support.

·       They made less than $4,050 in gross taxable income.

·       They  lived with you for the entire year.

·       They are not a dependent on someone else’s taxes.

·       They are not filing a joint return with someone else.

·      They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.

From your information, it appears neither  of your parents meets the requirements in bold.

So I do indeed meet all of these requirements. However my tuition and fees are not being deducted due to the system automatically registering me as dependent due to the fact that im a full time student.
