Does an amended return count against the limit of 5 federal filings?

When using Turbo Tax, if I electronically submit my Federal return, then electronically submit an amended Federal return, does that count as 2 federal filings?  I think the answer is 'Yes', but would like positive confirmation.

No, an amended return does not count against the limit of 5 federal filings.  The amended return is not filing a new return.

Interesting.  I had asked because I was unable to electronically submit a 5th return today, after submitting 4 + 1 amended return (Turbo Tax Mac).  I assumed the amended return counted as a federal filing.

To workaround, I purchased a Turbo Tax Windows license and was able to load the return and submit electronically.

It sounds like there is a bug in Turbo Tax Mac federal filing count logic.

Please reach out to TurboTax Customer Support for assistance with this issue. Support will be able to review your account and confirm how many e-filed returns you submitted.

What is the TurboTax phone number?

The automated phone message system didn’t understand “desktop version” and recommended I go online and click on Help for support ( hung up on me).

This is a simple question - does an amended return count to the filing limit?

Also, Is there an option in Turbo Tax desktop to show the federal filed returns?  I don’t see an obvious way other than opening the individual files.

@jtashiro1  The software supports five efiles total.  That does include efiling amended returns although creating an amended return doesn't count as creating a new return.  You can also create as many returns as you want.  You just can't efile them.

There isn't an option to show the filed returns.  That you would have to get by calling support.

Thank you for confirming what I'm seeing.  It would be great if the product (or website) showed the number of efiled returns so that one can track it easily.

I'm trying to efile an amended return for a return that was already efiled and accepted.  Turbotax desktop says I have already reached my 5 return limit so I must mail it.  That seems contrary to the answer you gave about a similar situation.  Can you help?

An amended return DOES count against the five return efile limit.  So if you have already efiled five returns then you won't be able to efile the amendment.

OK, I guess I can live with that if I must, but I can't figure out how to get the Filing Instructions to indicate file by mail.  The still say that I've filed electronically so I don't need to submit anything.  They don't even provide addresses for mailing the federal and state returns.

Wow, but I didn't click the "send button" electronically. I want to double check before send for many times (maybe 5). Now it shows I reach 5 limit and won't let me file it again. I can understand there is 5 limit, but shouldn't it ONLY count if I really send it? Please help.

You might see the 5 efile limit message prior to efiling. If you are certain you have not efiled 5 returns, select the 'continue' button if you are ready to efile. @cxy007

This is what I see now. The issue is that I see a submit button yesterday, but I didn't click it. I just tried to review it again. After a couple of times, now it shows this. So in general, when will the number of filing limit get count? How do I know the actual "5" e filed returns? I think they should be cancelled. I have mail the amend manually. But I am sharing with my families and they might hit this message I think.

You can check your e-file history in TurboTax Desktop by clicking on File in the top left-hand corner of your screen, selecting Electronic Filing, then choosing Show Electronic Filing Status History.

I can see only one message shows:

your return has been received and will be forwarded to taxing agency at the appropriated time. but I see a lot of messages shows "Filing changed state to SUCCEEDED_AGENCY".

So basically I only have one file, and based on the time, that's my original filing. There is no record for amend, which I did using paper filing.

Just wondering why it still shows I reach limit?

Have you checked your e-file history using the steps provided by IsabellaG.  You can click File and then Electronic File to view that amount of E-file's listed.  If you are still having issues, you can contact our us using the link below:

Yes. I did. I found only one records. But I am good now since I mail the amend one.

Just to confirm, the amend filing also take as 1 out 5 limit, right?

Yes, it does use 1 of the 5 limit.
