Do you need to file taxes if you're on disability

You will need to file a 2021 Federal tax return with the IRS if you had:

  • $400 or more in self-employment net earnings (gross income minus expenses); or
  • Marketplace health insurance and you received advanced payments for the premium tax credit.

If you only report Social Security disability income, you likely are reporting $0 taxable income and are not required to file a Federal tax return. State requirements vary.

Social Security Disability Insurance benefits may become taxable when one-half of your benefits, plus all other income, exceeds an income threshold based on your tax filing status:

  • Single, head of household, qualifying widow(er), and married filing separately taxpayers: $25,000
  • Married filing jointly: $32,000
  • Married filing separately but lived with your spouse during the tax year: $0

Do you mean Social Security disability or some other sort of disability?   And do you have any other income?   If Social Security disability was your only income in 2021 you do not have to file a tax return.   If you had some other sort of disability with tax withheld you would want to file for a refund of tax withheld.   Or if you have also received other income along with the disability you might need to file.
