Yes, if you have received a Form 1095-A, you would need to file a Form 8962 Premium Tax Credit.

In TurboTax online, here are steps:

  • After you sign in to your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • To the right upper corner, in the search box, type in "health insurance"
  • Select "Jump to health insurance"
  • Follow prompts

If you’re simply amending your return of your own volition, and Form 8962 hasn’t been requested by the IRS, please see the TurboTax Help article "How to amend (change or correct) a return you already filed" for instruction on how to amend your previously-filed tax return to include Form 8962.  You’ll need your Form 1095-A, which you indicate that you have.

If the IRS has requested Form 8962 from you, please see the TurboTax Help article "The IRS is requesting Form 8962 for 2018" for additional guidance.  Note that there are different ways to do this, based on whatever version of TurboTax you're using.  They're shown in the three dropdowns near the bottom of the article.

TurboTax asked about health insurance over the past two years in more detail, but nowhere in this year's app does it aske if you were covered and what you need to do to fill out any form. At least not that I saw. Now a simple 1040EZ where I used to get my refund back in 2 weeks is taking over 10 weeks because I have to fill out and fax or mail forms into the IRS. Can't get a hold of TurboTax. No phone number & no customer service. Won't use them again

If your return was rejected, log in to your account and click Fix my return.

Enter your 1095-A form and TurboTax will automatically generate form 8962.

  1. Go to Federal Taxes.
  2. Go to Deductions and Credits.
  3. Scroll down to Medical and click show more.
  4. Scroll down to Affordable Care Act (Form 1095-A).

If you return was accepted you can't make any changes.

You need to amend the return and add form 1095-A.

Here's how you amend your return:

  1. Sign in to your account.
  2. Scroll down to Your tax return & documents , select 2019 and then Amend (change) return
  3. Select Amend using TurboTax Online.
  4. Follow the instructions, your refund or tax due will change to 0. This is normal on amended returns.

Amended return can't be e-file, you need to print it and mail it in.

On the Tax Home web page when the Form 1040X for amending a 2019 tax return becomes available there will be a link - Amend (change) return. Form 1040X is expected to be available on 02/27/2020.

You don't need to send the amended return,  print form 8962 and attach it to the 1095-A form.
