Do I have to upgrade to TurboTax Self-Employed to add small business expenses? It appears so, I don't see a way to move forward in that section without upgrading.

You shouldn't have to, there should be a choice on the bottom of the screen that says Do not upgrade.

Yes, you will need to upgrade to Self-employed to enter your expenses. You are not required to upgrade, you can just enter your income and be done, but you will not be able to enter expenses unless you do so.

That is crap, I'm already paying hundreds of dollars.  So it's either part the irs more or pay turbo tax more.   I'm going to HR Block.  At least they tell you upfront they are charging you instead of wasting 2 hours of your time and then up your bill.

@bdeblock1 There has been no activity in this thread for nearly five years.  If your issue is that you need to know which version to use for self-employment income and business expenses---with online TurboTax you need Premium to prepare a Schedule C for business expenses, or any version of the desktop download can be used to prepare a Schedule C.  The desktop software can be used on a full PC or Mac, but not on any sort of mobile device.
