Can you check to see if my phone number was on the dark web? I got a email from you saying it was on the web?

First of all, no one in the user forum knows anything whatsoever about you, and we certainly do not have a way to know your phone number or check to see if it is on the dark web.  No one in the user forum can access your account or any of your information.   You likely received a scam email or phishing email that you should ignore.   TurboTax would not know anything about your phone number being on the internet or "dark web."

If you have any reason to suspect fraud involving your tax information or Social Security number:

If your Social Security number is compromised and you know or suspect you are a victim of tax-related identity theft, take these additional steps:

  • Respond immediately to any IRS notice; call the number provided.
  • Complete IRS Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit. Then print and mail or fax according to the instructions.
  • Continue to pay your taxes and file your tax return, even if you must do so by paper.

If you enrolled in IDNotify (part of the Max or Premium Services package), that company might have notified you about suspicious activity.  You need to log into your IDNotify account to check what they have on file for you.

In general, there is nothing alarming about your phone number being on the "dark web."  Not too long ago, everyone's phone number was in a paper phone book and every phone customer had a copy, unless you paid extra for a private listing.  The fact that your phone number is on the dark web just means that out of 10 billion possible US phone numbers, yours belongs to a live person.  You might get a bit more spam phone calls than usual.  You could contact your carrier to change it, but that carries a lot of hassles.  You should be a lot more worried if your birthdate, bank account numbers, or credit card numbers were exposed.

No one on this forum has access to your personal information.

Because legitimate emails can sometimes be copied by bad people, don't click any links in the email, but use your web browser to log directly into ID Notify and make sure the connection is secure (padlock icon in the address window).

I got an email message from you saying that my Social Security # and email address were o the dark web. Can you confirm that it was sent from you or is the message from a hacker?

This was likely spam.
