Yes you can still file a 2016 tax return. If you owe taxes, you will be subject to penalties and interest for late filing and late payment. If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty.

The online version of TurboTax will be available to file a return until mid October.

To use TurboTax, you must buy and download the program for tax year 2016. Here is where you can buy it: https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

Or you can download 2016 forms from the IRS web site and fill them out by hand: https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/prior-year

No, you cannot. Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2017 is closed permanently.

Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2017 returns is now permanently closed. You had until midnight on Monday, October 15 to finish and attempt to e-file; if your e-file was rejected you had until 3 a.m. Pacific time on October 21 to make corrections and re-file. Now it is too late to e-file. If you have any changes at all to make to your 2017 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac (not to a mobile device).

Some users are having trouble accessing their 2017 tax files while the TT system is in transition from 2017 to 2018. You may have to wait to re-gain access to your tax file.

When you complete your 2017 return, it has to be filed by mail. When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS and/or your state received the return.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2016 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

Only a 2017 return can be prepared online and e-filed.

If you need to prepare a return for 2014, 2015, or 2016 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

(if you want to prepare on paper for free: )

You can download the Forms and Instructions from the IRS web site:

https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/prior-year

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS received the return.
