Did you get married in 2023?  If you were married as of Dec 31 you file Married for the whole year.  You only file for the whole year, it isn’t broken up.   Or please explain more.  What is going on?

It depends on what changed for your situation during the year.  No matter what, you will file one return for the whole year.

Typically, you use the appropriate filing status for the year based on your marital status as of the last day of the year.  So, if you got married during the year, you could file Married Filing Joint or Married Filing Separate.

If you were divorced, then you would file Single or Head of Household.

If you were widowed during the year, then you can choose Qualifying Surviving Spouse, which gives you tax benefits of filing jointly.
