Hello!
I am currently investigating whether I can use Turbo Tax to file my taxes for 2021. I am a self proprietor and a member of a religious order.
I received instructions from my organization that specify that I need to fill line 2 of my Schedule SE with my ministry income W-2's box 1 (wages) and place an asterisk after the amount listed. Then, at the bottom of the page, I need to place an asterisk and write, "Earnings received as a member of the" religious order I am a member of. I believe this is due to the fact that I must pay and already had withheld from my income the SE tax for that ministry income listed on the W-2. I am unsure if this situation is covered by Turbo Tax - could anyone confirm Turbo Tax supports this procedure? What license do I need? The Self Employed license?
Additionally, I believe I must carry my sole proprietorship's profit from Schedule C to Schedule SE on line 2. I suppose I can just add this value to the value I am supposed to specify according to my organization's instructions and clarify in the note at the bottom how much is from the religious order. If anyone has other advice on this point, I would love to hear it as well.
Thank you very much!
Yes, you may file with TurboTax. Your W-2 income is reported under Wages & Income (not Schedule C). Look for specific questions in the interview sequence regarding the clergy.
Income reported on Form 1099-MISC is considered self-employment, and this should be reported on Schedule C.
If you have an unrelated sole proprietorship, you would record that activity as a separate business for another Schedule C. TurboTax will calculate any SE Tax for you.
