Can I file an extension if E-file submission rejected ?

My efile was rejected as my son's SSN was not recognized.  He just got it and we have found out since it can take 30 days for SSA to propagate that to all databases.  I decided to file an extension and efile later but just got this from turbo tax.

" You only have until April 20, 2019 to update and re-file your rejected return.

Any returns not re-filed by that date will be considered late by the IRS, and may be subject to extra penalty fees, plus interest. Learn more

Until a return is accepted, the government considers your rejected return as not filed. "

It mentioned nothing about extension so am I allowed to file an extension after having an efile rejected?

thanks

Darren

Yes, you can file an extension if your return was rejected.

Technically, if you are getting a refund, you do not need to file an extension.  However, it is recommended just as a precaution in case something changes and you end up owing or your State requires an extension.

Keep in mind, if you have a balance due on your return, you need to pay it with your extension.  An extension only extends the time you have to file your return, it doesn't extend the time you have to pay the tax.

Filing an extension only takes a few minutes, and it's free.  Click here for instructions:  How do I file an Extension using TurboTax?
