Bug Report - can't enter property taxes

I've looked all over this site for a place for reporting bugs and I can't find it anywhere.  Please provide a location for that purpose.  My problem is this:

  • During the step-by-step interview process for reporting deductions
  • When you get to the input field to input property tax deductions,
  • The input box is locked and does not allow input

There are two places you can enter property tax paid on your home. The first one is on the 1098-INT screen. If you have entered your property tax there, it is the only place you can edit it. The second is in the property taxes section.

Check here first:

  1. Select Federal from the left side menu.
  2. Select Deductions and Credits.
  3. Expand the list and scroll down to Mortgage Interest and Refinancing (Form 1098)
  4. Click Edit/Add to the right.
  5. Click Edit to the right of your 1098 entry.
  6. Click Continue until you get to the page that says, Let's get the details from your 1098, at the top.
  7. Below box 5 you will see a box for Property (real estate) taxes.
You can edit this amount here.

If this box is blank, you need to go right to the Property tax section:

  1. Select Federal from the left side menu.
  2. Select Deductions and Credits.
  3. Expand the list and scroll down to Property (Real Estate) Taxes.
  4. Click Edit to the right.
  5. You can edit the number here only if the this the first place you entered it.

Thank you for that information, but why should I not be able to enter it in the step-by-step instructions for deductions?

I.ve been using turbotax on a mac for years. This year, I've been unable to enter my property tax payments into the software. I tab into federal taxes then debits & credits and attempt to update to priority tax line, All I get is a white screen without an ability to enter my information. This has never been an issue since I started using turbotax many years ago.

It looks like TirboTax has shifted all their emphasis to the online version because there’s more money in that for assisted tax returns and they’re completely neglecting the desktop versions.

I am having the same issue with no direction from Turbo Tax.  Preventing me from finalizing return.

Same issue.  Is there a resolution??

I have not encountered any issue with entering property taxes paid in either Windows or Mac desktop versions.

Property taxes are entered in Deductions & Credits, Your Home, Property Taxes. If they are listed on Form 1098, they can be entered in the Form 1098 screen instead.

If you are seeing a blank screen, it may be an issue with your device's display.

This thread contains some suggested fixes.

What if we don't get a 1098 because we don't have a mortgage? I see a screen "Checking for Property Tax Deduction" then prompt to "Skip for Now" or "Enter info". If I click to enter info, it takes me back to the Steps for Deductions & Credit.

To enter, edit or delete Property Taxes -
Click on Federal Taxes
Click on Deductions and Credits
Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
Under Your Home
If paid through your lender
On Mortgage Interest, Refinancing, and Insurance, click on the start or update button
If paid directly
On Property Taxes, click on the start or update button

Or enter property tax in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to property tax

@DoninGA that doesn't work for us because we own our property outright, so we don't pay interest on a mortgage. When I click on the box to update Property taxes, that's when I get the screen "Checking for Property Tax Deduction" then prompt to "Skip for Now" or "Enter info". Then when I click to Enter Info, it returns me to the Step-by-Step screen. It's a perpetual loop. Bummed.

Check to see if there is a Form 1098 listed in your forms list and if so, delete the Form 1098.

You should be able to only enter the Property Taxes paid.  I also do not have a mortgage and enter my Property Taxes using the procedure I posted without any issues.

Click on Federal Taxes
Click on Deductions and Credits
Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
Under Your Home
On Property Taxes, click on the start or update button

I have this same problem.  I own my own home and don't have a mortgage.  So I tried to enter directly in the Property Taxes field.  There is $0. in the field and when I hit Update, I get a pop-up that says  'We need a bit more info to see if you qualify'.  The choices out of this field are Back, Skip for Now, and  'Enter Info'.  When I try to enter info, I go straight back to the entry screen which takes me back to the 'We need a bit more info to see if you qualify."

Any one find a solution????

This simply doesn't work.  The field has $0. in it and there is a button to update, but it won't let you update the amount.  This is a bug.

Why hasn't this been fixed yet Intuit. This is the last straw. Maybe a class action should be started against these clowns?

If the field has a $0 entered then there is a support detail that needs to be removed.

Put your cursor in the box that shows $0.

Click on Edit at the top of the desktop screen

Click on Add Supporting Details

With the Supporting Details window open click on Remove at the top of the window

I discovered this solution after HOURS of searching.   I'm running Mac, so there was no Edit screen.   I had to go to the actual form and work on it from there.   THIS IS A BUG THAT NEEDED TO HAVE BEEN FIXED LONG AGO.  Intuit needs their wings clipped for putting out garbage with NO ONE TO TALK TO to get solutions to their problems.

Community?  Seriously, how does relying on the community constitute support?

I did find the work around but I paid for a program. One should not have to have to figure out the bugs in the program in order to use it. I paid over $100 for this fraud of a program this year. There are more bugs too:

The personal Rep Bug that no one has worked around except by making an incorrect, thus illegal,  entry.

There is a personal Info bug also.

I can't e-file and am supposed to be able to.

Turbo Tax Home and Business 2023 is a ripoff.

I'm having the exact same issue in Jan 2025, still searching for a fix, have even tried to use the forms, but not finding which line to show my property taxes on.

If there is $0 pre-filled in the box for property taxes, then try this -

Put your cursor in the box

Click on Edit at the top of the desktop program screen

Click on Add Supporting Details

On the Supporting Details window click on

Remove

to the top of the window.

You should be able to enter the property taxes.

Found a backward way to enter State and Local Property Taxes. Go to forms, go to Schedule A, scroll to Line 2a. (I always add details). When I went back to the Step-by-Step instructions, my entered property tax amount was in there....finally!

Here we are now in Jan 2025 and STILL, this bug exists.

I fought this last year, and again this year, but the issue is subtle and here's the fix I found (I'm on Windows, but Mac might be the same):

- On the menu bar, select View / Form

Path 1:

- In the left panel, click "Schedule A"

- Now in the right pane, find 5b for State and local real estate taxes

- Click in the box where you'd enter numbers, and then Edit / Add Supporting Details

- Delete all of the data in rows that might be there -- that's what prevents the step-by-step from working

Path 2 (if path 1 doesn't work):

- In the left pane, click Tax & Int Wks under Schedule A

- Now in the right pane, find 2a for Real estate taxes...not entered on Form 1098

- Click in the box where you'd enter numbers, and then Edit / Add Supporting Details

- Delete all of the data in rows that might be there -- that's what prevents the step-by-step from working

You should be able to enter data in the step-by-step process now -- it worked for me.  I had old notes from a prior year in those supporting detail tables.

Thanks.  I just ended up entering them in the form itself, and it populated the step by step with those numbers.
