** Bug ? ** Can't Enter Selling Price Per Share for employee stock - Nonqualified stock option (NQSO) Plan

The interview work flow is much different this year than last.  I don't know if its been fully updated or not, but when trying to report a cashless option sale for which I've already paid tax and the income is reported on my W2, TurboTax Premier is not allowing me to enter a sales amount.

In addition, it keeps switching back to a status that says "NO, this is not employee stock."

I haven't been able to reach anyone at TurboTax either as it seems you need to have purchased live support...which seems strange for a bug like this.

Anyone have any luck?

if you have TurboTax Premier you get phone support.

You may have to pay the fee first.

Hi and thanks for the reply.  I've never needed to contact them before and tried two times to use the one phone number I found, but it just said I didn't qualify for live access.

What did you mean by my getting support because I had Premier, but might need to pay a fee.  The only reason I bought Premier of Deluxe was to handle these NQSOs and at least the Mac version of the App seems bugged in that I cannot enter data into a field plus the workflow order seems weird.  Last year's asked up front whether a stock sale was a NQSO and then asked completely different questions to figure out how to report the sale since the income and taxes are already part of my W2.

It's just a mess *sigh*

Any links to next steps would be greatly appreciated.

Same problem with mine as well.  I am still even trying to understand why I had shares held back, since it looks like I am not paying tax on my 1099-B.

the free versions of TurboTax don't include phone support.

I am having the same issue when attempting to enter selling price per share for employee stock - Restricte Stock Unit(RSU).  I tab to the field and it's not allowing me to enter any data.  Anyone have any luck?  Looks like a bug.

Hi @Cynthiad66

The problem is that TurboTax will not allow entry into one of the fields.

I tried the phone number in your post, it would not connect me to a live person.

I'd also like to add that it is beyond infuriating that there is absolutely no way (that I've found) to contact Intuit about this problem if you are a downloaded App user.  This is an $80 piece of software this is not functioning properly.

I would suggest trying to move past that screen and the next few screens where certain boxes do not allow entry until you reach the form 3921, (or other similar statement with the same information) where you can enter the appropriate information to move forward with an appropriate conclusion. This seemed to work for me today.

Please update the issue if you need further assistance.

@DianeW777

Thanks for the response...I have tried what you suggest and TurboTax just reports Zero for the selling price.  I also went directly to the form associated with the interview section and it, too, shows zeros.  The fields are calculated so even if I knew how to do it manually (which I don't...hence...TurboTax), it would not allow me to override the interview questions.

In 2019, this process was seamless, which is why I bought Premium this year where last year I upgraded from Deluxe just for this feature.  For 2020, it is just a complete broken mess for both options and RSUs.

Is there ANYWAY to speak to a human about this?

Surprisingly, I was able to actually to talk to a human when I called Support last night and reported the bug.  After 30 minutes, I was told it's an issue and we will have to wait for a software update.  If you want to receive updates on this, someone on this thread already posted the link regarding the selling price issue and where you can sign up for updates.  It is really a ridiculous bug, a form "entry" field should be "enterable" 😐.  There's nothing complicated about this. Anyway, let's hope it gets fixed soon.  Otherwise that's an $80 software that's just useless!

On the positive side, the Support person I talked to last night was very patient and helpful.

Hiya...thanks for the update!!

How were you able to talk to a real human? I tried using the IVR tree and kept being told it couldn’t connect me.

I called [phone number removed], honestly I was getting upset answering all the questions over and over again and then somehow I ended with a live person to my surprise.  It probably eventually just connected me to a live person after so many tries.

*sigh*

Intuit redacted the phone number...just brilliant of them.

Would you mind trying again, maybe spell out all or part of the number?

@rwross

The phone number I used is from the link that @Cynthiad66 posted earlier on this thread.  Under CD/Download software section.

Ah, thank you, that's the one I tried but got no where...someone's looking out for you 🙂

In other news, TurboTax updated for me today, but this bug was NOT among the fixes.

Finally found a workaround after comparing forms between 2019 and 2020.

On the Capital Gain (Loss) Adjustments Worksheet, under Section III Specific Adjustments, I had to check the box that says, "Check this box for employee stock sales requiring adjustments." As soon as I clicked that, all the fields filled out and cost basis appeared to work as expected.

Note: I did not see a place in the "Easy Step" UI that allowed for this box to be selected. It seems like 2019 did it on its own, but that dropped out in 2020. Therefore, I only was able to do it by modifying the form directly.

Hopefully this helps you all and helps the dev folk fix the bug.

@rickharris thanks for jumping in on this.

I started this thread because I was having a problem with reporting options properly (NQSO), but some folks like you were also having similar issues with ESPP shares.  That's totally cool, and I have no problem with this thread covering both...hopefully the additional breadth will get Intuit to fix it faster.

That said, I thought I'd try your method just to see if it would also unlock the fields for NQSO but I couldn't even find the check box in Section III.  Could you provide a screen cap because I'm clearly missing it.

Now, for those of us dealing with options, the relevant section of the worksheet is Section IV.  I've tried to enter FMV there and the number vanishes the next time you go into the worksheet.  In addition, the worksheet references IRS form 3921 so I tried searching for that form in TurboTax.  No result.  So, maybe it's related, no idea.

I do know that my Mac Version just updated today, and it is still not working.  Really disappointed with Intuit.

@rwross My specific use case is Restricted Stock Units (RSU). Given your description, I think you were looking at the "Emp Stock Wks" which shows Section IV as NQSO. The box is on the "Capital g/l adj" form. I've include included the screenshots below.

The highlighted form (and the ones like it below) are the forms where the check box is for me. I've cleared out added details that appear in parentheses next to it.

Here is the box that I checked:

I've now discovered this same issue. I have premier, and was able to get someone on the phone. This appears to be a known bug that has not been fixed. I have both RSU's and ESPP's from my employer, and neither will compute the cost basis correctly because you can't enter selling price per share. So frustrating Turbo Tax would screw this up this year. Why did they change it from 2019? I've used turbo tax for years, and never had a problem with my RSU's and ESPP's until now.

I believe the latest update (02/04) may have fixed this problem.  Additional numbers populated when I went through the interview steps again.

I'm guessing that one field was never designed to be user-enterable, but also wasn't calculating.  I added no new information, but the calculation completed this time.  The only other difference is that I had my W2 imported this time instead of simply having placeholder numbers.

If anyone is still having issues, you might consider putting the letter "V" in box 12b of your W2 and placing a number in there equal to the gain on your options.

If that actually fixes the problem, then I still think the workflow is nuts, because TT shouldn't require the W2 part of the workflow to be complete before entering in capital gain information.
