Behind on 2022 taxes - Do I have to wait for 2021 tax returns to be accepted by IRS before sending 2022 tax returns?

I just mailed my 2021 tax returns since efile option for 2021 closed. I am expecting a refund, so do I have to wait for them to approve my tax returns and send the refund amount before filing my 2022 tax returns?

Thank you for the quick reply. I understand that efiling for 2022 is closed and I will have to mail them to IRS. When does the 2023 efile option end?

Using TurboTax you can e-file a 2023 tax return at any time on or before October 15, 2024.  After that date the 2023 return can only be printed and mailed with TurboTax.

You can efile 2023 until Oct 15.  After that you have to print and mail it.   You have 3 years to file for a refund.

Be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them. You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places. Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

Oh and to efile 2023 you need the 2022 AGI but since you are filing 2022 late enter 0 (zero) for the AGI to efile.

if there are carryovers from 2021 reflected on 2022 return still file it ASAP.  However, a refund may be delayed until the iRS fully processes 2021.  also the return must be filed by mail so use a tracking service.

@VolvoGirl Thanks for pointing that out. Should I enter zero(0) for  prior year AGI for my 2022 tax returns also since IRS wouldn't finish processing my 2021 tax returns by the time I mail the 2022 tax returns?

@Mike9241If I am expecting a refund for 2023 taxes, will I receive it only after IRS fully processes 2021 and 2022 tax returns (even if I efile 2023 returns) ?

No.  The prior year AGI is only needed to efile to verity you.  There is nowhere to enter the prior  year AGI on a mailed return.  The  IRS accepts all mailed returns for processing.  You are using the Desktop installed programs to do 2021 and 2022, right?  Online is only good for 2023 now.

@VolvoGirl- yes I used the Desktop version to do 2021 tax returns and will do the same for 2022 as well.  Thanks for the clarification.

The IRS does not automatically keep tax refunds if you have not filed a prior-year return. The IRS may keep your refund if it appears you’ll owe money when you do file. If the IRS thinks you owe tax on an unfiled return, you’ll receive a CP88 notice from the IRS.
