Amended return - Do I sight BOTH the 1040X and the 1040 that is generated?

When I print out the amended return form for 2020, there is the amended form and a copy of the incorrect 1040 that has a signature page too. Should I sign and date only the amended form 1040X? Or both the amended form and the 1040?  TurboTax requires me to mail the form. I cannot submit electronically for either Federal or NYS.

@Gaypana

Do not include your old 1040 nor your revised 1040 because the Form 1040-X reflects any changes there and becomes your new tax return.

Include any new/corrected document only if it shows federal tax withheld, and include in order only those Sequence Numbered tax forms and Schedules that changed or were added due to your amendment.

You only print, sign and date the amended return Form 1040-X.  You do not send either the original or changed Form 1040 with the amended tax return.

Hi @fanfare  and @DoninGA . I hear you both! BUT, I am confused because in TurboTax, when I print the Amended forms to mail, the Federal section includes Form 1040. Below is what it prints.

Instructions say: " What you need to mail: Your amended tax return - Form 1040-X. Remember to sign and date the return.  Be sure to attach all forms or schedules that changed to your amended return. "

BUT you say to only mail the first 2 pages. - Right?

  • Form 1040X - 2 pages
  • Form 1040 - 2 pages
  • Schedule A: Itemized Deductions - 1 page
  • Schedule B: Capital Gains and Losses - 1 page. This where my change occurred ad this has the new info
  • Form 8949: Capital Gains and Losses (Copy 1) and (Copy 2) - Copy 2 is the impacted one, reflecting the new amounts.
  • Form 8283: Noncash Charitable Contributions
  • Schedule 1: State and Local Income Tax Refund Worksheet
  • Electronic Postmark from when I originally filed 5/1/2021
  • Additional information Schedule B: Interest and Dividends

For my amended NY State return, the instructions say: "Simply mail in the forms that printed with your amended tax return."  And, that includes both IT-201X and IT-201 and some other things. - BUT That seems clear that I should mail everything that printed. - So I wondered, do I sign both IT-201X and IT-201.

I guess if I send too much, and sign every possible "Your signature" space, no real harm done?

Why is THIS the hardest part for me?!! LOL

Form 1040-X  becomes your new tax return.

If you sign and include either 1040, you risk having it entered erroneously  as your tax return.

Then you will have filed two times.

That is  a mess. IRS will freeze your tax processing indefinitely.

@fanfare That sounds scary! Ok.  Since it says: "Be sure to attach all forms or schedules that changed to your amended return.", I will send:

1040-X - 2 pages

Schedule D: Capital Gains and Losses - because that changed - 1 page

Form 8949: Capital Gains and Losses (Copy 2) - because that changed - 1 page

I also wrote a letter explaining the mistake and the change I made.

Does that have your blessing? 🙂

Thanks.

if Part III explanation is too small to describe what you did, attach an additional sheet.
