Amend my 2021 filed taxes

I filed my 2021 taxes stating that someone else can declare me as a dependent. The IRS amended my mothers tax return stating that I was not eligible to be her dependent; what forms do I need to file to amend my tax return to reflect this and get my deduction for myself?

Hello RachelV,

Thank you for reaching out to us with your tax questions.

The form that you need to use to amend your tax return is Form 1040X. This is a two-page form where you will complete and file it to the IRS.

Below are the links for Form 1040X and the instructions:

Please let me know if you have additional questions. Have a great day!

Hello @RachelV ! I am happy to assist you today.

Here is a great link with the steps you need to take to amend your return if you used TurboTax: Amendment Instructions .

To amend, you would need to go through the personal information questions and indicate that you are not a dependent.  Make sure to answer all of the questions.  The system should then reflect a refund since you have a higher standard deduction filing as a single nondependent. You should be able to efile the amendment as well.

Please reach back you if you need any further clarification!
