You are looking at a summary that shows the difference between a refund you are getting on one return and tax you owe for the other one.    You have tax due that you have to pay by May 17.    Look closely at your actual tax returns so you know which one you have to pay.

Your state tax due cannot be paid from your federal refund.

It is not possible to pay your state tax due from your federal refund, nor is it possible to pay a federal tax due from a state refund.  The federal and state treasuries are completely separate from each other.  You may have seen a TurboTax summary of your federal and state amounts that confused you into thinking one was “paying” the other.  It is not. The ONLY thing you can pay for from a federal refund is your TurboTax fees if you chose that option.

If you have federal tax due you can pay by mailing your payment with the 1040V voucher, (which has the address printed on it, having the payment taken out of a designated bank account, or you can pay directly on the IRS website.

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

"Tax due" is money you owe and have to PAY.

Did you ever actually look at your tax forms? Did you print them out and look at them?   Since you do not understand the TurboTax summary you need to look at your tax forms.  You did not explain fully whether it says you owe federal or state and we cannot tell---we cannot see your tax returns.    But you OWE for one of them.   You are getting a refund for one and owe the other.

If you are getting a refund for your federal tax return you will see an amount on line 34.      If you are getting a federal refund then you must OWE money to the state.

If you owe tax to the IRS it is on line 37 of your Form 1040.   Look at your form----what does it say on line 37?

And look at your state tax return-------what does it say?   The amount you owe will be near the bottom of the form near the words "Amount you owe"

Federal is 493

State is 226

Both of them combined is 267.  493-226=267

It doesn't mean anything.  267 is only for you information.

One return (federal or state) has a tax due and one is a refund.  We don't know which one you owe to federal or state.
