2019 TurboTax issues, problems, and bugs

I didn’t know where to post issues I encountered while using 2019 TurboTax Deluxe, so I’ll just report them here.  Note that I did update TurboTax before each session and I did save my return before each exit.

  1. Probably the most disconcerting issue is when I go back to review my TT inputs, sometimes I see that TT have removed the answers I am certain I had input earlier. Often this happened after I answered the TT question, “Do any of these apply to you”, such as where TT ask are you legally blind or did you pass away, or where TT ask questions to determine if your state refund is taxable for federal purpose.  This oddity makes me wonder:  (1) did I forget to answer this question and, consequently, did TT calculate the wrong tax liability, and (2) if I don’t re-input my answer and leave it unanswered as shown, will TT calculate the wrong tax liability?  I tested this several times by re-inputting my answer, saving and exiting the return, and then returning to the same page, only to see that my answer is no longer there.
  2. Immediately after I open TT for another session, I instruct TT to check for updates -- but TT doesn’t tell you the result (ie., whether the software is up-to-date already or not).
  3. During the federal return review process where TT says, let’s check your deductions and credits, I click on the Continue button to see the results -- but no results are shown.
  4. Near the end of the federal return process where I input bank information, I must input the data twice (the second time to confirm). Well, TT asked me to input the same data a third time, as if I had never input the information the first time.
  5. I couldn’t insert a flag on the page where I first input my social security number.
  6. TT skipped over the Wages & Salaries page, as if I already filled it in. TT doesn’t even ask if I received a W-2 form.
  7. I had to register my TT software twice, once for each of the two user accounts I use on the same computer. Since this is one computer, I should need to register TT only one time.
  8. This item relates to the TT website. Whenever I log out of my account, there is an error message:  Unexpected System Error.

I hope TurboTax can fix these bugs in their software for 2020.  The work flow for 2019 was not very good.  Having to unnecessarily input the same data over and over only increases the likelihood of mistakes.

Thank you for your feedback!  I'll share your post with TurboTax Moderators for review.  I do know that your #8 item has been "around" for a long time.  Guess it's just not a high priority item for TT right now.

And for #6, I know last year many users FILED without having entered their W--2 info.  So this issue isn't new, either.  I haven't seen posts like that for 2019, but your post reveals that the problem is still there.

Thank you again!

1) can be answered ... if you revisit certain screens in the program where you had to make decisions you have to answer them all over again ... stop revisiting those screens and the questions will remain answered.

I found a glitch in Deluxe 2019 on the Property Taxes entry screen.  It will not take an entry in the 'Additional homes or land box'.  Whether I go to the box with my mouse or by tabbing, it will not type anything.  Please pass on to TT moderators.  I need to put an entry there.

I have found it impossible to get the installed TT2019 to read data from TT2018 (neither data file or PDF). I was able to get the on line version to read the data from TT2018 which was on my computer and it created a TT2019 file visible on the web version. Great, but that file when downloaded to my computer would not load into my resident TT2019.  Many attempt to fix with the regular suspects...Any ideas?...Sympathy?  -- Stay Well!

Don't know why you couldn't transfer 2018 directly into the 2019 program.  I have some ideas you could try if you still want.  But it sounds like you got it into the online version.

You downloaded the .tax2019 file?

After you get the program installed the first thing to do before you open your tax return .tax file is to update the program and install any state programs you had. Then open your file. So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to FILE - NEW).

When entering deductions, when it gets to Cars and other things you own, it asks me if I had a vehicle registration and when I click yes the window goes blank and stays blank.  I have tried closing and reopening the software several times.  Same result.  I cannot continue.

when I click yes the window goes blank and stays blank.

I've not experienced that recently. But when I've had in occur in the past it was either a screen font size or resolution setting.

On Windows 10 go into settings and then go into System. For Display, make sure scale and layout is set to 100% and that your display resolution is set to whatever is "recommended" for your graphics card/monitor setup. If you have to change any of those settings, reboot before checking to see if it helped.

Is TurboTax telling you that these forms have not been finalized yet or that you can't e-file these forms?

A number of these forms cannot be e-filed, because California couldn't make the software that received e-filed returns ready in time.

Can we request a refund and just file for free with another application. This so annoying!

Turbo Tax said I cannot e-file or mail in.  Basically, I cannot print out the CA portion of the returns.

Very odd.

I can't get the mortgage interest worksheet data to transfer to schedule A. Called support last night, spent over an hour trying to find the problem, no luck. Ended the session with rep sending me a link to do a manual update. Installed the update, no luck. I can do an override entry but will be unable to do an electronic submission. I believe this is a bug, but TT is reluctant to admit it. Very frustrating.

I completed my 2019 federal return on turbo tax as i have for many years, the imputs have been verified and the  software says i am ready to transmit so i push the button. It is not transmitting and i am asked for more information and an information sheet pops up.  the data on this sheet is correct. this has happened several times and i am about to the point of filing a paper return. has anyone else had this problem?

I have also just completed my TT2019 Fed and State after having a series of exasperating problems. One problem sounds like yours, a little, and was solved by someone on this exchange. The problem may relate to a value that TT thinks is estimated which has gotten shuttled/combined from one form to another. The solution offered was to retreive the data from the offending form. Delete the offending form and reenter it without any estimated values.

In my case, the offending form was a worksheet that was easily replaced. A more complicated form would be a pain to delete and replace, I expect.

Turbo Tax is buggy as of last night, won't let me close out doc, quit turbotax, open doc, hover with mouse over clickable links (blue) eg "Learn More" and click through; won't let me toggle between it and browser (help menu!), so can't edit or even finish my taxes. How to fix? Pissed. Thank god I got through Sched. C in time, needed this am to file for both unemployment AND finish SBA loan. 😡

I PURCHASED turbotax package for 30 dollars and after trying to input additional information about the interest I paid for the student loans turbo tax required me to pay additional 80 dollars to complete the taxes and after all that the taxes were rejected. Now I have to deal with IRS myself because there no live person to respond to my question about the additional money I have to pay .

@cspraags

You "bought" what ?   A downloaded version ?  And when/where ?   Nothing has been $30 this year on the TT website.

And are you using the Online or Downloaded version now ?

Just a guess until they respond, but maybe they purchased PLUS for 29.99 then had to upgrade to Deluxe.  If he/she prepared both Fed and State returns, that could explain the additional $80, resulting in total $110.

@ cspraags

You also need to provide the rejection error code, and someone here might be able to say how to fix it.  By the way, since you used a paid product, you do qualify for free phone support with TurboTax Support, if necessary.  We can tell you how to reach them.

Is this your situation?

If you had to upgrade from PLUS to Deluxe, it sounds like there was something added to your return (like the "student loan interest" you mentioned) that the Free Edition/ PLUS could not handle.  Free Edition and PLUS are for very minimal returns.  If you had anything that required Schedule 1, 2, or 3, Free Edition/PLUS cannot be used.

FAQ:  Why do I have to upgrade from Free Edition or PLUS to a higher edition?
https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/upgrading/help/why-do-i-have-to-upgrade-from-free-edition/00/26379

You mentioned earlier that you had entered "student loan interest" and then had to pay more fee.   As you can see in that FAQ, it was the student loan interest that cannot be prepared in PLUS and requires an upgrade to Deluxe, so that's why you had to pay the extra $80 if you have both Federal and state returns.

I found this not to be the case.  Vast amounts of info that I put in  disappeared and it wasn’t because I revisited it.
