With the last update of TurboTax 2021 I am getting this error "1040/1040SR Wks: Charitable Contributions has an unacceptable value." My value is 300.

Its line 12b.   Are other people getting a similar problem?  Looks like a Turbotax bug to me.

Bug will be fixed but not until after the holiday.

As of 1/25/22, issue remains.  I entered $600 but TurboTax changes it to $300 on line 12b. I was also having issues with Recovery Act $2,800. TurboTax is not fixed yet.

Follow these  steps to post the charitable contribution.

Federal 1040 line 12b Charitable Cash Contributions under CARES Act can be entered at either:

  • Deductions & Credits / Donations to Charity or
  • at the screen Charitable Cash Contributions under CARES Act immediately following Based on what you just told us, the Standard Deduction is best for you.

However, always pass all the way through both Deductions & Credits and Other Tax Situations.

At Deductions & Credits, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Wrap up tax breaks.

At Other Tax Situations, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Let’s keep going.

If you need to remove the entry:

  • Remove the entry at Donations to Charity in 2021 by deleting the entry.
  • Remove the entry at the screen Charitable Cash Contributions under CARES Act by entering a $0.

See TurboTax Help.

Same issue occurred when I prompted the final Review tab. Error message showing my $300 was inaccurate, software defaults to $300 and any manual change results to error message.  Awaiting Engineer fix, however waiting since Saturday and no software update yet. There is a work-around this issue, but I believe TurboTax should address the flaw in the software. Good luck!

Using the TurboTax desktop editions -

To remove the error I went into Forms mode and deleted the Charitable Organization Worksheet.  Then on the Form 1040 Worksheet for Line 12b removed the $300 amount so Line 12b is now blank (empty).

Going back to Step-by-Step I completed the Deductions & Credits section without entering anything for a charitable donation.  Continuing through the screens until landing on the screen labeled Charitable Cash Contributions under Cares Act, I entered $600.  Continued through Final Review without error.

For the TurboTax online editions -

The problem appears to be that a charitable donation was entered in the Deductions and Credits section of the program when you are only eligible for the Standard Deduction.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen

Click on Tools

Click on Delete a form

Scroll through the all the forms, schedules and worksheets listed and delete all the Charitable Organization forms listed.

When completed with removing forms click on

 Continue With My Return

at the bottom of the list.

Click on Federal on the left side of the screen

Click on Deductions & Credits at the top of the screen

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on

Wrap up tax breaks

Continue through the screens.  After the screen showing that you are getting the Standard Deduction the following screen is Charitable Cash Contributions under Cares Act.

Enter $600 if filing Jointly or $300 for all other filing status'.  The federal review and the Final Review should no longer show an error for the charitable donation.

I am still unable to resolve the error message I receive when I attempt to finish my taxes.

Any thoughts??

Make sure that the amount corresponds with your filing status.  If you are married filing joint the amount should be $600.00  Single should be $300.00.

I changed it five times from $300 to $600 (joint filing).

It keeps returning to the error.

Change it to $600 and then do not run Smart Check again.  You can file your return and the $600 will be on the Form 1040 Line 12b.

The refund amount changes when it goes back and forth.

Wondering if this error will raise a red flag.....

I saw previous posts that TurboTax had a fix coming up. Not sure if that is accurate...is there a live customer support chat?
