Thanks Annette and also to Jotika for the quick reply. Worked like a charm.
This "workaround" doesn't work if, like me, you're taking the standard deduction with the IRS, but itemizing with the state. Please answer the original question.
This did not work for me. I never was taken to the CARES act question.
So that we can better assist you what State are you needing this for?

I agree. I itemize for my Arizona return. This "workaround" does not work. I just went into the error where it showed $300 and changed the amount to $600. I believe this worked, but I would appreciate hearing from TurboTax that this is indeed an appropriate "fix." It would be helpful if the programming error was "fixed" so that it works properly for those of us who itemize our state returns.
Alabama. It’s a known issue. I confirmed that after finally getting someone on the phone who was familiar with it.
We at TurboTax are making every effort to fix all of the issues facing taxing season. We suggest work arounds often so that the customer can get their return prepared. We suggest using the work around if it solves the problem and your return appears accurate.
As long as you don’t go back and run the error check again (triggering the error again, ironically) you should be able to e-file for the correct amount. They fixed that much with a recent patch. It’s possible, but not guaranteed, that a complete fix might be part of a release scheduled in the next few weeks. That was the best info I could get.

@creffk
Did you read all of my post? That “workaround” prevents your charitable contributions from being itemized on your state return. Your STATE return.
Thank you for sharing this. We are aware of the known experience and we are working on a resolution.
We appreciate your patience in this matter.
If you would be willing to share a diagnostic copy of your tax file, it could be helpful to examine the situation in more detail. The diagnostic file will not contain personally identifiable information, only numbers related to your tax forms.
To do so, follow the instructions below and post the token number along with which version of TurboTax you are using (Online or CD/downloaded and which edition) in a follow-up thread.
Use these steps if you are using TurboTax Online:

My state return is for Kentucky. The $600 value was entered correctly on my Federal forms until I completed my KY taxes. Then when I run the final error check the program changes the $600 to $300, reduces my refund accordingly and flags it as an error. Reinputting the $600 manually does seem to fix the problem unless I rerun the error check which then takes me back through the loop again.
As of 02/05/2022, the most recent update did not resolve the error. Additionally, whenever I attempt to view or save my state return I get the following error: "Your Alabama return(s) is currently [sic] unavailable to view, print, or download because some of the forms haven't been finalized yet." There is a link that says "Notify me when my forms are ready" that takes me to a web page to enter my email address. But it throws an error on submit because no forms have been specified (there's no option to specify forms).
I renew my original question (when will the charitable donation bug be fixed?) and add the following. When will I be permitted to view, print, and save my completed Alabama tax forms?
Before anyone asks again, my return has already been reviewed by one of your tax experts (re: case #[phone number removed]) (Why am I not surprised? case number one four eight six eight five eight six two two)
Same here. I'd like the analysis/ check to complete successfully before e-filing so that the returns come back 100% accurate according to the TT program.
One of the biggest problems with Turbo Tax is there is no way to track a bug fix. Further it should be TT confirming the workarounds work not offering as more or less buyer be aware and expecting the customer to assume responsablity.
The suggested work around is BS . After 2+ hours of answering the dumb TT questions I gave up and submitted with $300. Turbo Tax has lost me as a customer forever.
Do they have this much trouble with the online version? Given the problems the last few years, I'm starting to wonder if they're just phoning it in with the desktop software. Notice how the "experts" haven't even bothered to reply to the fact that the problem still persists since the last software update. Not to mention the inability to view/print/save state forms.
