State Credit for property taxes: not accepting input data I input the numbers and then when I hit continue, it tells me to review it again. Not sure why...

I click all they way though, it asks for my paid property taxes and then there is a second box of nonresidential paid property taxes.  I put the values from my bill in the top box, and since I didn't have nonresidential property taxes I left it blank originally.  When it asked me to review it the first time I put 0 in the nonresidential box.  It's still asking me to review the Credit for property taxes and wont let me get past it.

Can you clarify what state you are located in so I can assist you further?

@LenaH I live in the state of IL.

I completed a mock-up return claiming the Illinois property tax credit and was able to pass State review by following the instructions below:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click State on the left-hand side.
  3. Continue through the return.
  4. Click Revisit next to Property Tax Credit on the page Take a look at Illinois credits and taxes.
  5. On the page Credit for property taxes, answer yes to all four questions, if applicable in your situation.
  6. On the page Property information, enter the county and the PIN. Please ensure the PIN comes from your property tax bill.
  7. On the page Property taxes, enter the portion, if any, that was not for your principal residence in Illinois. Then enter the total of any property taxes that were deductible on your federal return as a business expense for a business, rental, or farm, whether or not you actually took the deduction. I entered $0 for both boxes.

If you are still getting an error, it would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2021" file that is experiencing this issue.

You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions: Go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.

  1. Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
  2. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
  3. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
  4. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is. Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.
  5. Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.

@LenaH

Hi there:  I'm having the same problem with my Illinois return.  I keep getting the "We recommend you revisit the last topic you were working on to make sure all your info's correct." every time I go to "revisit" the property tax credit on the Illinois Return.  All of my mortgage interest and property tax information were put in for the federal information.  This keeps happening and it will absolutely not give me an opportunity to go through that section, put in the PIN number or anything.  How can I fix this?

Thank you,

In your situation, it is recommended that you first log out of your TurboTax Online and delete your cookies.

On rare occasions, they may make your browser think you already did something that you still need to do. To fix that, you'll need to delete (clear) the cookies from your browser. For more information on how to delete your cookies on the browser you are using, please see How do I delete cookies?.

You can also try to use another browser to complete your return.

Then, please follow the instructions below:

I'm caught in an endless loop of:  "We recommend you revisit the last topic you were working on to make sure all your info is correct"

THIS IS WHEN I TRY TO OPEN THE PROPERTY TAX CREDIT FOR ILOLINOIS IN THE STATE SECTION - TAKE A LOOK AT ILLINOIS CREDITS AND TAXES.

I go back and there's nothing to check or change.  I tried following your guidance for the person who has a similar problem (Re: State Credit for property taxes: not accepting input data I input the numbers and then when I...) BUT I GET THE SAME DEAD END LOOP.

You are commenting on an old thread. We'd love to help you complete your tax return, but need more information. Can you please clarify your question?

This is happening to me too. I have entered all the info including my property taxes paid for my primary residence in Illinois. It asks me property taxes paid which I entered and then amount not on primary residence which is 0. But when I submit for approval, it keeps telling me I need to review the credit for property taxes. Over and over again.

Did you enter your property taxes in the federal section first?  @kmg051077 ?

After you enter your property taxes in the federal section, enter 0 in both the fields on the Illinois return, and see if that works.

happening to me as well. Standard deduction federally so can't itemize. I have the two pins for my condo + garage entered correctly and the amounts correctly. Just stuck on needs review. I tried entering many different combinations or even 0 and take no return and still can't complete.

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

TurboTax Online:
Sign into your online account.
Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:
Open your return.
Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent”
This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created. Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

hey @AmyC I appreciate you looking into this.

1185433 is token.

I have condo + detached garage with different Unique IDs for each.

Illinois is state, tried switching to federal entry like suggested but stopped since the standard deduction would be greater than itemized.

Tried entering 0 for both boxes just to see and still "Needed Review"

Entered just condo, condo + garage as total.

Tried entering garage on second box since its not primary, handful of iterations all led me to still Needs Review and couldn't move forward.

Hello @AmyC , I am also currently experiencing this issue. I just followed the steps and was in an endless loop. I have uploaded the clear form and my token number is: 1190622.

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi there I am having the same problem with my Illinois state tax return. Cannot get past what I paid in taxes for my house. My token number is:

1190637

Any help would be appreciated as this has become exhausting to try to get past.

I downloaded your sanitized tax files to check your experiences.  All show you have claimed the IL property tax credit.  The credit correctly shows on your forms IL 1040, line 16 and on the Schedule ICR, lines 5 and 13. I utilized the "Review" function as well and there were zero errors all the way to the filing step.

Typically, this indicates an update has not completed in your program.  Try closing everything, and signing out of your TurboTax account. If you are working with an online product you should also clear your browser cache.  A computer "restart" may help as well.  Here is a link that will help, if needed.

For desktop versions after you restart and then sign back in, use the "Online" tab and "Check for Updates".  This should prompt any updates to finish.

Thank you for the response.

Unfortunately I am still unable to proceed past this screen and stuck in the loop.

I am using Chrome on a MacBook and there does not seem to be a way to check for updates.

You don't need to update, as it appears you are using the Online version.   I looked at your return, and there are no errors on your return preventing you from e-filing.   Your property credit is reported correctly on your IL return.   If you click on File from the left menu, and proceed through the filing screens, you should be able to e-file successfully.   @tngriffin

I was in the same endless loop, until I read this thread.

Interesting that your reply provides additional requirement that it does not say on the form- you say :

And the form simply states "Enter the total property tax you paid in 2023 and the amount of property tax paid that was not on your principal residence."

THIS IS THE PROBLEM! The form is misleading with an incomplete explanation for what scenario to reply.

I can now exit my endless loop.

Or so I thought I'd be out of the loop...and still in it. So my problem is not solved either. I'm going to clear cookies and shut this thing down for the night. Too annoyed to continue for now. And now I'm  confused again  whether to put in my taxes or put in zero based on the other chats here. I have a primary house - no rentals or farm.

If the loop is seeing the ''needs review'' message, that will not prevent e-filing.   Enter zeros in both fields and then check your state return.  If the credit is there (it has been there on every return I have checked), then you can file without error.  @benslow

Hi @DawnC .   In order to get an IL 5% tax credit on my property taxes- it makes sense that I enter the property tax that I paid somewhere...but if I do NOT itemize federal- that amount is not entered anywhere in Turbotax.  Does this mean that If I use Turbotax and do not itemize the Federal, I lose the IL property tax credit? (because, otherwise, I qualify: You will qualify for the property tax credit if: your principal residence during the year preceding the tax year at issue was in Illinois, andyou owned the residence, andyou paid property tax on your principal residence (and taxpayer's federal adjusted gross income (AGI) does not exceed $500,000))

No, you don't lose your credit.  You can take the credit on your IL return without entering it on the federal return.  Go back to the IL return and edit the Property Tax Credit section.   @benslow
